The history of the copper mine may date back to the 13th century: operations are believed to have taken place at that time. A later phase of mining is more firmly dated: it resumed in 1853 and ceased in 1869. The “Ores, Gold and Minerals†museum displays thousands of exhibits that illustrate the historical significance of mining in Salzburg. The museum is housed in the former Gewerkenhaus, built in 1594, once the home of the copper mine’s operators. From the centre of Hüttau, the access road to the copper mine leads towards Larzenbach. After about 650 metres, you reach the show mine’s reception hut. Check local conditions before setting off. Parking spaces for coaches and cars are available directly next to the show mine.
If travelling by train, it is important to note the stop: passenger services no longer stop at “Hüttau Terminal†in the Sonnberg district. Trains now stop at the new station near the village, which began operating on 15 December 2024. Check the timetable and the correct stop before travelling.
Hikes and Architectural Heritage
The Hüttau-Niedernfritz area has about 100 kilometres of well-marked hiking trails. They lead to scenic heights and popular alpine pastures; check local conditions. Hüttau is considered a starting point for mountain hikes to idyllic natural spots. The network of trails offers a different focus from the mining attractions and the single Erzweg stage, which takes around four hours.
Hüttau and its district of Niedernfritz are located in the Fritztal valley. Hochgründeck reaches 1,827 metres and, together with the Tennengebirge and the Fritztaler Berge, shapes the mountain landscape around Hüttau-Niedernfritz.
