In Wiener Neustadt, medieval architectural history meets different perspectives on the city’s past. The casemates vividly demonstrate how a bastion works: together with the Strada Coperta behind them and the three casemate tunnels, the complex gives visitors a complete picture. Guided tours of the casemates take place every Saturday at 11:00. Tickets are available directly there or at the St. Peter an der Sperr Museum; check the date before your trip.

Between the Cathedral, the Academy and the City’s History

Construction of Wiener Neustadt Cathedral began shortly after the city was founded, around 1200, in the Romanesque style. St. George’s Cathedral houses both the baptismal font and the tomb of Maximilian I. The enclosed rear area of the cathedral is accessible free of charge and without prior registration every day from 08:00 until nightfall via the church entrance on Grazerstraße. Access may be restricted for operational or religious reasons.

The Theresian Military Academy, the oldest military academy in the world, offers another historical perspective. Groups can take a guided tour of the exhibition “From Imperial Residence to Officer Training Ground” by prior arrangement; the tour lasts about 90 minutes. Visits are therefore subject to advance registration and are offered in a group format. Those interested in history and institutions can combine this insight with the city’s historic sites, without needing to follow a set itinerary.

At the St. Peter an der Sperr Museum, the modern, interactive permanent exhibition “neuSTADT ERZÄHLEN” tells the story of Wiener Neustadt over some 800 years. The museum brings together the former city museum, founded in 1824, and the former monastery church of St. Peter an der Sperr. Here, history is encountered both as an exhibition subject and through the building’s architectural history. The Reckturm’s foundations date back to the early 13th century. It is also home to a small, privately run arms museum with firearms dating from 1630 to 1950, historic bladed and pole weapons, and equipment from the Austro-Hungarian Army. Museum visits are available on request.

Further Perspectives on the City

The history of Jewish life in Wiener Neustadt can also be explored on themed city walks, offered from March to November. The Neukloster collection comprises some 4,700 individual items, including 1,000 objets d’art, 200 paintings, and 3,500 stones and shells. These two offerings explore different themes: the walk focuses on the city, while the collection’s range of objects provides an insight into the Neukloster.

From 8 May 2026, tours of the Water Tower are scheduled for the first Friday of each month at 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00; advance registration is required. Check the dates before your trip. The schedule differs from the weekly Saturday tours of the casemates and can be taken into account when planning your visit.

Green Spaces, Cycle Routes and Seasonal Experiences

If you would like to spend some time outdoors between historic discoveries, the city offers various ways to get active. The Academy Park is suitable for walking, jogging, cycling and horse riding. The City Park is certified as a “Natur im Garten” (Nature in the Garden) show garden. These two green spaces can be chosen according to your interests: the Academy Park is associated with several activities, while the City Park is distinguished by its show-garden certification.

The approximately 2,000-kilometre EuroVelo 9 route also passes directly through Wiener Neustadt, opening up cycling routes in every direction, including to the Vienna Alps, the Bucklige Welt and as far as Schneeberg. If you are planning a cycle ride, bear in mind that route conditions can change. For a different way to enjoy the water, the outdoor area of Aqua Nova has a diving tower with 1-, 3- and 5-metre platforms, a children’s pool and a water playground. It is open seasonally.

The Marienmarkt offers a culinary addition, with regional delicacies, fruit and vegetables, and high-quality wines. As individual vendors may change, it is worth factoring the market’s offerings into your plans without counting on particular stalls. Together with museums, historic buildings, walks and cycle paths, these options let you prioritise your interests for a stay in Wiener Neustadt.
