The Waterfall Trail in Miesenbach is a suitable starting point for a hike up the Dürre Wand. In Scheuchenstein, Biedermeier art, church history and the castle ruins take centre stage. This allows you to consider different hiking and cultural themes when planning your trip.

Hiking Trails on the Dürre Wand

The Dürre Wand is a mountain ridge in the Gutenstein Alps and stretches from Miesenbach to the Schneeberg. In addition to the Waterfall Trail, the Austrian Long-Distance Hiking Trail 01 also runs along the ridge; some sections offer scenic views. The Gauermannhütte is located on the Dürre Wand at an altitude of 1,154 metres and offers panoramic views of the Schneeberg, Untersberg and Ötscher. This means the ridge, individual scenic trail sections and a clearly specified hut location can all serve as different reference points for planning a hike.

The Gauermannhütte can also be reached from Miesenbach via a longer route starting at Miesenbach-Waidmannsfeld station. Miesenbach also has its own hiking map and well-marked trails to help with navigation. When planning, check which starting point suits your tour; the two access routes mentioned to the Dürre Wand and the hut are not the same route.

Another option is the Gauermann Circular Hiking Trail: it is 4 kilometres long, very easy to walk and suitable for children. The trail continues to Börsenhof Hornung, which is designated as a place to stop and rest. The distance and suitability for children are therefore specified for this circular route.

Cultural History in Scheuchenstein

The Gauermann Museum in Scheuchenstein houses numerous original works by Friedrich Gauermann, the Biedermeier painter of animals and landscapes. The collection thus offers a direct connection to an artist whose name also appears in the Gauermann Circular Hiking Trail and at the Gauermannhütte. Art and hiking are different travel interests here; the shared name offers a point of reference without equating the destinations.

The church in Scheuchenstein is dedicated to Saint Rupert and was first mentioned in a document in 1252. It is originally Romanesque and surrounded by a cemetery and a wall. Friedrich Gauermann’s grave is in the cemetery beside the church. This combination of church building, cemetery and grave also makes the place interesting for travellers who would like to explore local cultural history.

Scheuchenstein Castle Ruins lie on a completely isolated rocky crag in the gorge of the Ungerbach. In the late Middle Ages, the castle was a multi-part complex with tower-like buildings, as well as an outer bailey and a zwinger system. Several gates secured the steeply rising castle path. The historical description therefore covers not only individual structural features, but also their relationship to the castle’s secured access.

Plan Your Journey and Accommodation

From Wiener Neustadt main station, you can reach Scheuchenstein by regional train to Miesenbach-Waidmannsfeld. From there, take regional bus 7847 to the Miesenbach Krzg. Scheuchenstein stop, then continue on foot for 15 to 20 minutes. Check the connections before travelling so you can coordinate the train, bus and walking sections.

When looking for a hotel or other accommodation in Miesenbach, you can first decide which destinations will shape your stay: the ridge and its hiking trails, the 4-kilometre Gauermann Circular Hiking Trail, or the cultural sites in Scheuchenstein. The starting points and public transport connection mentioned offer different ways to plan your trip.
