Wiener Neustadt’s cultural history is presented in different ways: the Museum St. Peter an der Sperr takes visitors through more than 800 years of the city’s history, the cultural trail passes 29 sights, and the casemates highlight the city’s role as a fortress. There are also buildings with different functions, from the cathedral to the water tower. If you would rather not choose cultural sites based on a single historical period, you’ll find historical, architectural and museum perspectives side by side here.

History in buildings and the museum

The Museum St. Peter an der Sperr offers a tour through the city’s more than 800-year history. The cathedral adds an architectural perspective: construction began shortly after the city was founded, around 1200, in the Romanesque style. The foundations of the listed Reckturm tower also date from the early 13th century. These early historical markers contrast with a later development: in 1751, Empress Maria Theresa made the castle the Theresian Military Academy, now considered the oldest military academy in the world. A guided tour in front of the famous coat-of-arms wall at the Theresian Military Academy also offers a possible explanation for the abbreviation AEIOU formulated by Emperor Frederick III. This makes it possible to compare architectural history and institutional development across different sites.

The 50-metre-high water tower also connects a former function with its present-day one: it was once part of the Kaiser-Franz-Joseph water pipeline and is still used as a regulating reservoir. The Reckturm also houses a small privately run arms museum. Its collection includes firearms dating from 1630 to 1950, historical edged weapons and weapons for thrusting, as well as equipment used by the Austro-Hungarian Army. The tower’s early foundations and a military collection from much later centuries thus sit side by side in one place.

Casemates and cultural trail

The casemates in Wiener Neustadt are unique in Austria thanks to their excellent state of preservation and are protected as a historic monument. A guided tour leads through the “The City as a Fortress” exhibition, along defensive passageways, and past multimedia stations and 3D models. The tour thus combines a look at the complex with various stops and models. Compared with the tour through more than 800 years of city history at the Museum St. Peter an der Sperr, this is a more focused approach, centred on the city’s role as a fortress. If you’d like to explore this historical perspective in more depth, the casemates make a distinctive focal point of the cultural programme.

As an extension of the existing cultural route, the cultural trail covers 6.41 kilometres and passes a total of 29 sights in Wiener Neustadt. Unlike a visit to a single museum or building, it brings together several places along one route. It is therefore a distinct way to explore the city through its various sights. While the museum tour provides an overview of the city’s history and the casemates focus on a particular subject, the cultural trail passes numerous sights.

City park and getting around

If you’d like to spend some time outdoors between visits to historical sites, the city park has winding paths and plenty of places to sit. It also has a large children’s playground with Lower Austria’s tallest play tower. This makes a visit to the park different from the more history-focused options: here, the paths, seating and a specific play area take centre stage.

The railway station is another useful landmark for finding your way on arrival and during your city visit: it is within walking distance of the city centre. If you choose the city centre as your starting point for exploring, you can factor this connection between arrival and sightseeing into your plans.
