The Myrafälle plunge 125 metres over rocky ledges; around 5,000 cubic metres of water flow there each day. In Muggendorf, the options range from this striking natural feature to circular trails, longer mountain hikes and sites of cultural and historical interest. You can tailor your trip to the mix of water, scenery and activity you prefer.

Water and Trails at the Myrafälle

The site has 26 bridges and eight stairways. The Austrian Tourist Club looks after them, inspects them and maintains them. At Myrateich pond in the Myrafälle hiking and water adventure world, you can also enjoy a raft ride. Before your visit, check the condition of the site and whether this activity is available.

The trails around Muggendorf offer different options for how much time to spend. The circular trail around Hausstein starts at Gasthof Karnerwirt and takes about 45 minutes. A blue-marked forest trail leads from the Myrafälle to Jagasitz in about an hour. This gives you a choice between a shorter loop and a longer route to a viewpoint.

The Muggendorf forest nature trail is a circular route about two kilometres long. Along the way, you’ll find more than 60 different tree and shrub species, as well as numerous information and directional signs. If you’re looking for a longer route, consider the approximately twelve-kilometre circular trail connecting Pernitz, Muggendorf and Gutenstein.

Viewpoints and Mountain Hikes

Hausstein is a distinctive rocky summit. From its easily accessible side, you can reach a viewpoint with an unobstructed view as far as the north-facing cliffs of Schneeberg. The 300-metre-wide south face can be climbed via the Direttissima; check climbing conditions and access locally. Jagasitz at Kreuth also offers wide-ranging views across the entire Alpine foothills, including Schneeberg and Rax.

At 1,079 metres, Almesbrunnberg is in the Gutenstein Alps, within the municipality of Muggendorf. The ascent leads through Steinwandklamm gorge. A marked hiking trail from the former Jagasitz inn comes to within about 300 metres of the mountain; the final stretch to the summit follows an unmarked path. This distinction is important for navigation when planning your hike.

For a longer hike, the Unterberg Schutzhaus is an option. It stands at an elevation of 1,190 metres, about 150 metres below the Unterberg summit, and is a destination for hikers, ski tourers and pilgrims on their way to Mariazell. From the village of Muggendorf, the Enziansteig trail takes about three hours to reach it. This is considerably longer than the Hausstein loop or the trail to Jagasitz.

Local History and Cuisine

Vinzenzi Kircherl chapel was completed in 2010 and dedicated to Saint Vincent of Valencia, the patron saint of woodcutters. The lime kiln in Muggendorf is associated with the local tradition of lime burning, which J. A. Schultes documented in 1802. Both sites add connections to local history to the area’s hiking destinations.

Gasthaus Myrastubn is located right at the entrance to the Myrafälle in Muggendorf. It serves regional, seasonal and traditional dishes. As restaurant operations and menus can change, check the current offerings before your trip.

Getting There and Planning Your Trip

Bus route 332 runs from the Pernitz/Muggendorf stop directly to the Myrafälle; the journey takes about five minutes. Check the current timetable before travelling. There is also a cycling route: a well-marked cycle trail branches off in Pernitz and leads directly to the Myrafälle.

When looking for a hotel in Muggendorf, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip: waterfalls and shorter circular walks offer a different experience from a several-hour mountain hike to the Unterberg Schutzhaus. This lets you plan excursions around your preferred length of day and take the bus connection into account if the Myrafälle are among your destinations.
