Rohr im Gebirge lies at an elevation of 692 m and is surrounded by the foothills of the Alps: Schneeberg, Rax, Unterberg and Jochart. There are several ways to shape your stay: forest paths alongside streams, a hike to the summit of Jochart, historic pilgrimage routes, charcoal burning and winter trails. When planning, it is worth first deciding what kind of route and trip you want. The four mountains frame the landscape; Jochart is also the destination of a marked hiking trail that starts in Rohr im Gebirge.
Forest Paths, Streams and a Summit Destination
The “Workshop, Forest and Water” themed trail leads through the forests around Rohr im Gebirge and repeatedly follows streams. The marked hiking trail to Jochart starts at a public car park in the village, first leads to Schacherkreuz and then continues to the summit. You can choose between a themed forest trail and a route with a named summit as its destination. When choosing a hiking trail, you can decide whether to follow a themed route or head for a summit.
Pilgrimage Routes and Charcoal Burning
The Via Sacra follows historic pilgrimage routes from Vienna to Mariazell and continues from Rohr im Gebirge to Kalte Kuchl. The Wiener Wallfahrerweg runs via Perchtoldsdorf or Vienna-Rodaun, Mayerling, Kaumberg, Rohr im Gebirge, St. Aegyd am Neuwalde and Mariazell. The difference in routes from Rohr is useful for orientation: the Via Sacra continues to Kalte Kuchl, while the Wiener Wallfahrerweg passes through St. Aegyd am Neuwalde before reaching Mariazell.
With six charcoal-burning businesses currently operating, Rohr im Gebirge is a regional centre of Austrian charcoal burning. The Kneipp hiking trail is also part of the local hiking scene: it opened in 1988, is 5.5 km long and starts at the Ulrichsbrunnen, where visitors can enjoy refreshing arm baths. Alongside the pilgrimage routes, the village profile therefore includes both a cultural highlight and another historically rooted hiking trail.
Winter Trails and Ski Area
The West Loop offers a different kind of tour from the summit trail: it leads from the village centre through the winter landscape, past an observation tower to Krumbach and back again. Furtner is a family-friendly ski area in Rohr im Gebirge and has its own cross-country ski trail. This gives you two distinct options: a winter route through the landscape and a ski area with its own trail.
