Lanzenkirchen’s cultural attractions include historic churches, Frohsdorf Castle and museums. They are complemented by legends trails, hiking and Nordic walking routes, and a link to the Thermen Cycle Path. To plan your stay, you can first decide whether architectural history and collections, legends or trails through the countryside should take centre stage.

Landscape and Character of the Town

The Leitha, with its lush green floodplains, is the heart of Lanzenkirchen, south of Wiener Neustadt. The gentle, forested slopes of the Bucklige Welt, including the Rosalia Mountains, reach almost to the banks of the Leitha here. Opposite Lanzenkirchen, the wide Steinfeld plain stretches out, with its extensive pine forests. For those interested in landscapes, the contrast between floodplains, wooded slopes and open plains is a distinctive part of the town’s character.

Traces of Cultural History

The churches reflect different periods in history. Lanzenkirchen Parish Church has Romanesque architectural elements dating from around 1220. The Ofenbach mountain church has a Romanesque core; its surviving frescoes probably date from between 1360 and 1390. Romanesque architectural elements and medieval frescoes thus offer distinct historical points of interest.

Frohsdorf Castle represents a different chapter in architectural history: it was built between 1547 and 1550 as a castle-like complex from the fire-ravaged ruins of the “Krotenhof”. Together with the churches, Lanzenkirchen’s architectural history offers a range of themes to choose from when exploring its cultural past.

The museums also differ in what they cover. The agricultural museum houses more than 6,000 exhibits, offering insights into rural and artisanal life in the past. The fire brigade museum has well over 3,000 exhibits. Guided tours give visitors fascinating insights into the history of the fire brigade.

Legends Trails and Themed Route

The legends trails pass through every part of Lanzenkirchen; they are easy and straightforward to follow. Anyone who visits all the legends points becomes a master of legends and receives a certificate. The Bourbon Trail offers a different format: this historic themed trail is about five kilometres long and has twelve stops. The trails therefore differ in focus: the legends trails feature points of interest in the different parts of town, while the Bourbon Trail follows stops along a historic themed route.

Hiking, Views and Cycling

The LA1 - Frohsdorf Trail goes through the forest and joins the main hiking trail after about three kilometres; follow the red-white-red markings. The LA3 - Ofenbach Trail continues through the Ofenbach district towards Melberleiten. After two hairpin bends, the LA2 - Hauer Trail offers a magnificent panoramic view. The routes thus have different points of orientation: a link to the main hiking trail, a route through Ofenbach, and the panoramic view on the Hauer Trail.

Lanzenkirchen also has well-maintained, marked hiking and Nordic walking routes. Routes and markings may change, so check the information before setting out. Lanzenkirchen is also linked to the Thermen Cycle Path, which is also known there as EuroVelo 9. Check the route before setting off.

The Lanzenkirchen/Wiesen observation tower is 15 metres high and accessible only on foot. If you include it in your plans, you will need to walk to reach it.
