Stollhof is a destination for travelers who want to combine cultural history and trails around the Hohe Wand when choosing a place to visit. The finds date back to the Early Copper Age; there are also sacred buildings from several centuries and hiking options with different starting points and destinations. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore helpful to first consider whether your stay will focus more on local history or on hiking tours.

Archaeology and Sacred Buildings

The gold discs and solid copper finds from Stollhof in Lower Austria date from around 4000 BC and represent Austria’s oldest metal hoard from the Early Copper Age. The Stollhof treasure is probably about 6,000 years old. These dates bring a very early period into focus, while the sacred buildings make the village’s later history tangible across several centuries.

In the village center stands the Chapel of St. Sebastian, a rectangular building dating from 1713. Its gabled façade contains a niche with an 18th-century statuette of the Immaculate Mary. The chapel’s architectural style and year of construction, together with the later date of the statue, give it a distinctive historical character. To the east of Stollhof is the branch church of St. Mary, Queen of Peace, built between 1968 and 1970.

The Engelbert Church represents a different building period: it was built in 1934–35 to plans by Robert Kramreiter and restored by Otto Rinder in 1988. The church, with its Dr. Dollfuss memorial, stands on the slope of the Hohe Wand in the nature park. The chapels outside the village center also differ in location and date: the Marienkapelle, built in 1858, stands south of Stollhof. The Annenkapelle, a rectangular building dating from the late 18th century, is at the southern exit of the village. North of the village is the Maria Reyer burial chapel, a tall historicist rectangular building from the late 19th century.

Hiking Trails with Different Routes

Starting point and destination are useful ways to distinguish the hiking options. The Hanselsteig leads from Stollhof up to the Hohe Wand. Another hike runs from Stollhof to the Kohlröserlhaus and starts at the parking area at the end of Festplatzstraße. The trail goes through the forest via Festplatzstraße; from there, it can begin in the direction of the Hohe Wand. The Bründlries circular hiking trail lies on the Hohe Wand plateau and is associated with Stollhof. The routes described therefore differ: a trail from Stollhof up to the Hohe Wand, a hike with a named starting point, and a circular trail on the plateau.

The Kohlröserlhaus inn in Stollhof also has an exhibition room featuring regional finds. Exhibits include cave bear teeth and fossilized snails. This adds specific examples of local finds to the archaeological perspective.

Getting There and Choosing Your Stay

Regional buses on line 7845 run from Wiener Neustadt main railway station to Stollhof, including towards Muthmannsdorf Kapelle, Netting Kapelle and Emmerberg Kreuzung. If you plan to use this service, check the timetable before you travel. This connection adds a specific bus travel option to the local hiking trail starting points.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: Would you like to explore the archaeological finds and sacred buildings, or plan hikes towards the Hohe Wand? Stollhof offers different starting points for both—from the chapel in the village center to the trails described here. This lets you choose your destination based on the themes you want to shape your days there.
