The Valea Sighiștelului Valley is home to more than 160 caves; the valley ends in a gorge with narrow, sheer rock walls. This contrast between the underground landscape and the striking end of the gorge gives Bihor a clear focus on nature. Other caves offer different points of interest: a visitor route, an archaeological site or a habitat for large bat colonies.

Caves: Water, Rock and History

Peștera Vadu Crișului lies in the centre of the Crișul Repede Gorge. A stream runs through the cave and forms a waterfall as it emerges. The visitor route takes 30 to 60 minutes; visitor groups receive assistance and explanations from a cave guide in Romanian and Hungarian. At the same time, the cave is the natural habitat of a large bat colony that includes several species protected at European level. Here, you can experience both a distinct cave route and an important habitat.

Peștera Unguru Mare is located in a limestone cliff on the Crișul Repede; its entrance is more than 30 metres high. The “Galeria Sacră” contains a Bronze Age necropolis. At Peștera Meziadului, the visitor route itself is a distinctive feature: the developed circuit is 1,100 metres long and follows a figure-eight route through the Active Gallery and the Upper Level. The cave is also home to bat colonies of up to around 14,000 animals. Check visitor arrangements before travelling.

Peștera Urșilor has a visitor pavilion with a museum and a 488-metre gallery designated for tourists. Visits are only possible in a group and accompanied by a guide, so check visitor arrangements before your trip. The cave is near Chișcău in the commune of Pietroasa, Bihor County, at an altitude of 482 metres, and contains numerous cave bear fossils. This lets you combine the visit with a look at the location and the finds that define the site.

Karst Areas and Outdoor Activities

The Padiș–Cetățile Ponorului karst area is an important tourist destination in the Apuseni Mountains in Bihor. Its natural attractions include Cetățile Ponorului. The Padiș–Vârtop tourist area is a separate destination: it has 27 marked hiking trails. If you are planning a hike, check trail conditions before setting out. The two areas offer different points of reference: one is a karst area with natural attractions, while the other has a designated network of hiking trails.

Vârtop forms the southern boundary of Apuseni Natural Park. The Vârtop holiday village lies in the Bihor Mountains at an altitude of 1,150 metres, on the border between Bihor and Alba counties and along national road DN75. Activities available there include mountain hiking, mountain biking, alpine skiing, ski touring, via ferrata, climbing, rappelling and specialist caving. The list therefore ranges from hiking and mountain biking to climbing and winter sports. Check the current status of seasonal facilities.

Stâna de Vale is a mountain resort at an altitude of 1,102 metres. Mineral springs, waterfalls and the landscapes of the Apuseni Mountains shape the description of the place. Visitors can go alpine skiing, ski touring, mountain hiking, climbing and rappelling at waterfalls. In contrast to Vârtop’s broad range of activities, the waterfalls and the activities explicitly offered there are a distinctive feature here; check the latest information on seasonal facilities.

At Cefa Natural Park, you can go fishing, birdwatching, boating and horse riding. The range of activities caters to different interests, so you do not have to limit your time in the region to hiking or caves.

Architecture and Public Access in Oradea

Oradea also offers a cultural contrast to the natural areas: the City Hall Palace is open to visitors and features an eclectic architectural design with three courtyards. Check visitor arrangements before your trip. Sfântul Nicolae Church, also known as the Cathedral, is open to the public for sightseeing and religious services. If you would like to attend a service, check the relevant arrangements in advance.
