At the foot of the Munții Bihor, mountain hikes in the Nucet area range from easy forest walks to challenging climbs to the highest peaks of the Apuseni Mountains. Groapa Ruginoasă adds a different dimension with its eroded landscape; Băița and Nucet bring distinctive local and architectural history into the picture. This makes it easy to plan your stay around hiking time, scenery and history.

Hiking by time and difficulty

The easy hiking trail to Groapa Ruginoasă is 5 km long and marked with a yellow cross; it takes 2–3 hours. The moderately difficult Băița–Şaua Vârtop route covers 11 km and takes 4–5 hours; it is marked with a blue triangle. The challenging loop route Şaua Vârtop–Vârful Cucurbăta Mare is listed as 14 km, taking 6–7 hours, reaching an altitude of 1,849 m and marked with a red stripe.

In terms of time required, the trail to Groapa Ruginoasă, at 2–3 hours, is considerably shorter than the 6–7-hour loop; the Băița route, at 4–5 hours, falls in between. Check local seasonal conditions before choosing a route.

Groapa Ruginoasă: a landscape of erosion and quartzite

Groapa Ruginoasă is an erosion channel with reddish-purple quartzite layers and a gorge-like shape. The eroded area covers about 20 ha; the channel is more than 600 m wide and over 100 m deep. This makes it a different kind of destination from the climbs: here, the landform and its geological features shape the landscape.

Vârtop: hiking trails, via ferrata and winter sports

Satul de Vacanță Vârtop in Nucet is designated as a resort of local tourist interest. The designation is based on Government Decision No. 120/2024, published in Official Gazette No. 144 on 22 February 2024. The resort has five officially approved tourist hiking trails.

A 2024 description by the county council also mentions the Pietrele Negre via ferrata in Vârtop, rated difficulty level B. Check the conditions on the ground before setting out. For winter sports, Satul de Vacanță Vârtop has ski slopes; if you plan to use them, check the current slope operations in advance.

Landscape and local history

The Nucet–Vârtop tourist area lies partly within Parcul Natural Apuseni. Peştera Porţile Bihorului cave is in Băița, a locality belonging to the town of Nucet, in the Bihor Mountains of the Western Carpathians and within Parcul Național Apuseni. These are distinct geographical contexts: a tourist area that partly overlaps with a nature park, and a cave located in a national park.

The architectural history also has specific dates. The Casa de Cultură „Ion Davideanu” cultural centre in Nucet was built in the 1950s in the Soviet architectural style; its renovation was completed in 2011. Băița has been documented since the 13th century. Empress Maria Theresa is said to have chosen the site of the Roman Catholic church in Băița and had the church built.

For regional orientation, national road DN 75 passes through Nucet, Băița and Vârtop, connecting Ștei with Turda. Together with the hiking trails and the landscape and history described here, it gives an overview of the destination’s different aspects.
