The fortress ruins on the edge of the village and the Orthodox parish church give Finiș two distinct historical landmarks. The Valea Finișului, with its wooded slopes and Schitul Huta, is another highlight. For planning purposes, it is worth treating the village’s history, the valley route, and travel via Beiuș as separate points of focus.

Fortress, Parish Church, and Regional Cultural Heritage

The ruins of Cetatea Finiș stand on a peak at the edge of the village. The fortress dates from the 13th to 14th century and served as a refuge and defensive structure in the Middle Ages. Architecturally, it could only be accessed from one side. Its location and function clearly distinguish the site from the Orthodox parish church of Finiș, which dates to 1848. The two buildings therefore represent different periods in the village’s history.

The Finiș Village Museum offers another glimpse into regional everyday culture. A field study conducted in 2018 and published in 2019 describes it as a small museum in a household inherited by its owner from their grandparents. The study mentions a traditional loom dating from 1928 and describes the rooms as decorated in a style typical of the Beiuș region and the wider area. The loom and furnishings give the museum a different scale from the fortress and parish church: the focus here is on a traditional craft and an inherited household.

Schitul Huta and the Valley Route

At Schitul Huta, the dates for the church and the monastic complex should be distinguished: the church was built in 1927 and restored in 1973 by Bishop Vasile Coman. The Schitul itself was founded in 1998 in the Valea Finișului, under the protection of Stâna de Vale Monastery. It is dedicated to John the Baptist. Thus, the year the Schitul was founded is not the year its church was built.

Schitul Huta lies on the left side of the forest road that runs from Finiș through the Valea Finișului, about 12 kilometres from the village centre. The described route from Beiuș first follows the DJ 764F for 4 kilometres towards Finiș, then continues for 12 kilometres along a forest road to Schitul Huta. The distance from the village centre and the stated route from Beiuș have different reference points. If you plan to take this valley route, check current road conditions before setting off.

Getting There and Finding Your Way via Beiuș

Finiș commune is reached mainly via county road DJ 764 Beiuș–Finiș–Stâncești. This connects the village with Beiuș, which is about 6 kilometres away. From Beiuș, Finiș can be reached via the connection to national road DN76 Oradea–Deva.

No railway line runs through Finiș commune. The nearest railway station is in Beiuș and offers only limited services. For planning purposes, Beiuș and Finiș are therefore different reference points: Beiuș is both the location of the nearest station and the road connection to DN76; Finiș lies around 6 kilometres away and is reached mainly via DJ 764. Before departure, check current road conditions and, if travelling by train, the timetable and services available at the station.

Woodland Landscape and Protected Area

In the Valea Finișului, wooded slopes of Codru Moma rise on both sides of the road, with a river flowing between them. The valley road thus combines a specific landscape with the route to Schitul Huta. In Finiș commune, part of the municipal forest holdings also overlaps with the Natura 2000 protected area ROSCI0042 Codru Moma. If you plan specialised activities in the protected area, check its boundaries and management status in advance.

When choosing a place to stay, travel connections offer a practical point of comparison: Finiș is linked mainly by county road, while the nearest railway station and the connection to DN76 are in Beiuș. Culturally, the fortress ruins and parish church represent the village’s history; Schitul Huta is part of a separate valley route.
