Two themes are helpful when choosing a trip to Auşeu: historic architecture and collection culture, and the municipality’s landscape. Cultural attractions can be found in the villages of Gheghie and Luncşoara, as well as in Auşeu itself. They take different forms: two wooden churches, a hunting castle, and a collection of old objects. If you are interested in architectural history, you can compare the different forms and dates.

Wooden Churches and Hunting Castle in Gheghie

In the village of Gheghie, Zichy Hunting Castle dates from 1860. The wooden church dedicated to “Sfinţii Apostoli Petru şi Pavel” is also located there, and its origins date back to the early 18th century. These two dates point to different historical periods: the church is the earlier landmark, while the hunting castle is the more recent one, from the 19th century. Gheghie thus offers a comparison between sacred wooden architecture and a hunting castle from a later era.

Wooden Church and Interior Paintings in Luncşoara

The wooden church “Sfântul Gheorghe” stands in Luncşoara. Craftsman Lup Ioan built it in 1760; its interior paintings date from the 19th century. This makes it possible to distinguish the dates of its construction and decoration: the specific year of construction is followed by the paintings’ placement in a later century. Compared with the wooden church in Gheghie, the dates are also given with different levels of precision: its origins are dated to the early 18th century, while the church in Luncşoara has a precise year of construction. Its builder and interior paintings add further elements to its distinct historical story.

A Collection in Auşeu

Casa memorială din Auşeu offers a different perspective. It houses a collection of more than 2,000 old objects; some of the pieces are considered unique. For the churches and the hunting castle, the period of construction and decoration provide the historical context; here, by contrast, the collection’s size is defining. The number of objects refers to the collection as a whole, while only some objects are considered unique. Casa memorială can thus be viewed as a cultural-history theme in its own right, alongside the individual buildings.

Landscape and the Gepiş Valley

The municipality of Auşeu and its villages bring together mountains, wooded hills, and lowland areas. The terrain also includes floodplains and valleys, hills, and mountainous stretches. The landscape therefore encompasses both high ground and valley and floodplain areas. The Gepiş tourist area extends along both sides of the Gepiş Valley. This valley adds a specific geographical reference point to the municipality’s broader landscape.

A Regional Connection to the Wooden Church in Gheghie

A description from 2020 names the Ruta Bisericilor de Lemn din Bihor as connecting Oradea to the wooden church in Gheghie. This gives the church a named regional cultural connection in addition to its own historical dates. The route information answers a different question from the year of construction, dedication, or interior paintings: it establishes a connection to Oradea. This can help you distinguish between the history of individual buildings, the collection, and the landscape when choosing a theme for your trip.
