Two distinct travel interests stand out in Chișcău: Peștera Urșilor, with its three galleries open to visitors, and Route CA, which connects the Vârtop area with the village of Chișcău. In the cave, the focus is on cave bear bones and various types of stalactite formations; on the route, the connection between the two places provides the orientation. For planning, it helps to choose your focus early: would you mainly like to experience a guided cave tour, or should the hiking trail between Vârtop and Chișcău also be part of your plans? This distinction makes the character of the two options clear.

History and tours of Peștera Urșilor

Development work on Peștera Urșilor was completed in 1978; the cave was inaugurated and opened to tourists on July 14, 1980. This clearly distinguishes two stages in its history: the completed development work and the later start of tourism. For the visit itself, the organized format matters: the three galleries open to visitors can be explored on a guided tour.

Three galleries, different highlights

Galeria Oaselor displays numerous cave bear bones as they were found. Here, the finds themselves are the focus. Galeria Emil Racoviță contains stalactites, stalagmites, and columns in different shapes and sizes. The variety concerns both the shape and scale of the formations, making this gallery distinct from the bone display. Galeria Lumânărilor is named after stalactites that resemble candles. The name refers to a specific resemblance in shape and gives visitors an easy-to-understand visual reference. The contrast is clear: one gallery leads to bone finds, one to varied formations, and one to a named resemblance in shape. During the tour, you can shift your attention between actual finds, different formations, and a striking resemblance.

Location and directions

Peștera Urșilor is at the edge of Chișcău, in the direction of the village of Giulesti and Păstrăvăria Chișcău. To reach the cave, take the DN 76 (E79) to Sudrigiu; from there, continue on the DJ 763. The directions can be used together: the location description points from the edge of the village in the stated direction, while the road sequence gives the route via Sudrigiu and then along the DJ 763. When driving, it is best to keep both this direction and the order of the roads in mind.

Route CA as a hiking option

Route CA connects the Vârtop area with the village of Chișcău. As a hiking route, it is a separate focus alongside the cave tour: in the cave, the guided galleries and their different highlights take center stage, while on the route, the connection between the two places does. This comparison can make trip planning easier if you are weighing cave finds and formations against a hiking route. Your choice depends on which of these interests matters more to you during a visit to Chișcău.
