Rotenburg offers two distinct natural landscapes: Tister Bauernmoor is a typical raised bog, while the NORDPFAD Ostetal passes through an unspoilt river landscape. Circular trails and the Wümme Cycle Route add to the ways to enjoy the outdoors; architectural history in Bremervörde and the Sandbostel Camp Memorial Site complement the natural attractions with culture and remembrance.
Moors and river landscapes
Together with Ekelmoor, Tister Bauernmoor forms a 1,220-hectare nature reserve complex in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme). Ponds, grasses, heather plants and birch trees characterise this typical raised bog landscape. You can explore the area on foot or by moor railway; the train travels through Tister Bauernmoor at 6 km/h.
At the Oste Valley, the focus is on one of the most beautiful unspoilt river landscapes in northern Germany. The NORDPFAD Ostetal trail leads through this landscape of dense riverside forests, wet meadows, reed beds and steep slopes. Unlike Tister Bauernmoor, where ponds and bog plants define the scenery, here the river and its floodplains shape the natural experience.
Hiking and cycling
The 24 NORDPFAD trails in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) are circular routes ranging from 5 to 32 kilometres. The NORDPFAD Ostetal is one example of the landscapes you can discover along these trails. Their circular routes and varied lengths give the hiking options a clear structure.
The Wümme Cycle Route passes through Rotenburg (Wümme) and offers a different route structure: its northern route is around 125 kilometres long, and its southern route around 135 kilometres. Connecting routes divide the cycle route into attractive individual sections. The route is also suitable for day trips and families. This means that the circular hiking trails are complemented by a cycle route with two main routes and additional connecting paths.
Cultural history and wildlife
The Bachmann Museum is housed in Bremervörde’s oldest building. This building is also the last surviving structure of Bremervörde Castle. The exhibition is currently closed for renovation. When planning your visit, it is important to distinguish between the building’s history and its visitor status: the historic building is part of the destination’s cultural heritage, but the exhibition cannot currently be visited.
The Sandbostel Camp Memorial Site offers young people various educational programmes focused on commemoration, remembrance and learning at the historic site. While Bremervörde focuses on a surviving building associated with the history of the castle, Sandbostel is dedicated to remembrance and learning.
The LandPark Lauenbrück offers another opportunity to encounter nature. It is home to 200 wild and farm animals in spacious enclosures and large barns.
Paddling on the Oste
Sandbostel is a launch point for paddling trips on the Oste. The river is navigable only when water levels are high enough, so check the water level before planning your trip. Unlike the hiking and cycling routes described above, paddling depends directly on this specific requirement.
