Meyerhof gives Scheeßel a distinctive cultural focus: traditional crafts, local museum history and an old watermill come together here. There are various reasons to plan a trip – from exploring traditional crafts to visiting St. Lucas Church or travelling to the Hurricane Festival.

Meyerhof: Museum, Crafts and Mill

Meyerhof is a cultural and community centre with a historic wedding room, a local history museum and an old watermill. The Scheeßel Local History Museum comprises the Heimathaus and Meyerhof grounds in the centre of town and is one of the oldest museums in Lower Saxony. In this way, the buildings and museum grounds are complemented by a particular focus on regional crafts.

At Meyerhof, the focus is on blue printing, weaving, spinning and blacksmithing. The first three crafts showcase different forms of textile work; blacksmithing adds metalworking to the crafts on offer. Blue printing has been part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2018. Volunteers make textile products for their own use. At courses, events and guided tours, you can watch them at work. If you are planning a specific date, check the dates of the courses, events and guided tours in advance.

The history of a building is also part of Meyerhof: a sheepfold from Hamersen was dismantled in 1985 and rebuilt here. It contains a modern museum education room for working with school classes and as part of holiday programmes for school pupils. The mill at its current location has been owned by the Müller (-Scheeßel) family since 1507. It was in operation until the 1970s and has been a museum mill since 2003.

Church Art and Seasonal Opening Hours

St. Lucas Church in Scheeßel offers a different cultural highlight: its interior surprises visitors with lavish furnishings and plenty of gold decoration in the North German Bauernbarock style. From April to September, the church is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. As these are seasonal opening hours, check the times before your visit.

Getting to the Festival and Cycling

There is a handy landmark for getting to the Hurricane Festival: Scheeßel station is just a few minutes’ walk from the festival site. Check the timetables for your visit date. Another option within the municipality is a bike ride through the municipality of Scheeßel. It could include a stop at a Melkhus, where you can sample various milk-based drinks; the stop must be arranged on request.

Hiking and Cycling in the Wider Rotenburg Destination

For nature and cycling, it is worth looking at the wider Rotenburg destination. The 24 NORDPFADE trails in Rotenburg (Wümme) district are circular hiking trails ranging from 5 to 32 kilometres in length. The NORDPFAD Ostetal trail passes through one of northern Germany’s most beautiful natural river landscapes, with dense floodplain forests, wet meadows, reed beds and steep slopes. Another regional option is the Wümme Cycle Route, a circular route of around 250 kilometres that follows the Wümme more or less closely. These distances offer different scales for planning: circular hiking trails of 5 to 32 kilometres, compared with a much longer cycling loop.

Hiking and cycling options broaden the view of the wider Rotenburg destination.
