The Wümme flows through a broad meadow lowland; a hiking trail runs along its north bank beneath willows. There is also a cycling route through the lowland, a nature trail and a cultural centre with a long-standing concert programme. Hellwege can therefore be planned around different interests: landscapes and outdoor activities, local history or a concert date.

The Wümme, Trails and Habitats

A hiking trail runs along the north bank of the Wümme, where you can enjoy the tranquillity of the lowland beneath the willows. The river, broad meadow lowland and willows provide the trail’s scenic setting. If you want to explore on foot, the focus here is clear: the trail along the north bank and the quiet landscape by the water.

The Wümme Cycle Route, around 60 kilometres long, passes through the Wümme lowlands and, among other places, Hellwege. It is part of the approximately 250-kilometre Wümme long-distance cycle route, which runs from the Lüneburg Heath to the Weser. These distances refer to two different scales: the section through the lowland and the longer long-distance route. Keeping this distinction in mind helps avoid confusing the distances when planning a trip.

Hellweger Holz lies south of Hellwege. Black woodpeckers, great spotted woodpeckers, green woodpeckers and nuthatches live in its old beech trunks. While the meadow lowland describes the open landscape, Hellweger Holz is defined by its old beech trunks and the bird species that live there.

The Hellweger Wümmewiesen nature trail is around 1.5 kilometres long. Its topics range from habitats, white storks and migratory fish to the ecological continuity of flowing waters and plant identification. The trail thus brings together specific species, water-related issues and botanical topics.

Weser-Wümme airfield in Hellwege is home to the AIRBUS Flugsportgruppe Bremen e.V. The municipality of Hellwege describes it as a family airfield and a place where visitors can enjoy recreational activities.

Local History and Culture

Until the 12th century, the old village stood on a field bearing the local name “Dat Ole Dörp”. The field name points to Hellwege’s earlier settlement history and gives the historic site a specific name.

The Mühlenhof Hellwege comprises an ensemble of four buildings: two are historic, and two were newly built in the historical style. The ensemble includes a wood-fired bread oven, a mill, a granary and a cart shed. The combination of historic buildings and new buildings in the historical style makes the different origins of the four buildings part of the ensemble.

Concerts have been held at the Hellwege Local History and Cultural Centre for many years. They include classical music, jazz, singer-songwriter performances, choirs and solo instrumentalists. Hellweger Hausmusik has also taken place at the same venue every year for many years, on the Sunday after Easter. The concert programme and recurring date offer different reasons for a culturally focused stay. If a concert is the reason for your trip, check the event date for your chosen travel period.

When planning your trip and accommodation, you can weigh up nature, local history and a specific cultural event. The cycling-route distances are on a different scale from the short nature trail; concerts, in turn, may influence when you visit.
