A 40-metre-high keep, sweeping views and a cathedral built from the late 12th to the late 13th century: in Cher, discoveries range from major cultural landmarks to landscapes and outdoor activities. From the keep of the Musée du château Charles VII, the view stretches for more than 20 kilometres. Bourges Cathedral is considered one of the great masterpieces of Gothic art. Vast open spaces and architectural grandeur offer very different perspectives on the region.
Explore by bike, water and nature
Cher has 350 kilometres of developed cycle routes for cycling trips. The network may be extended or changed as projects progress. The Canal de Berry route is at least 190 kilometres long and passes through 35 municipalities. Seasonal boat rentals are available at L’Escale de Thénioux on the Canal de Berry. Check availability before your trip.
At Lac de Sidiailles, activities range from getting out on the water to land-based adventures: there are boat rentals, supervised swimming, an aqua park and tree climbing. Check operating conditions and seasonal offerings before your trip. If you prefer to experience nature on trails and through guided discoveries, the network of 24 Espaces naturels sensibles offers remarkable landscapes. Options include self-guided trails, guided visits, themed events and unusual tours.
Sancerre: landscapes, architecture and local flavours
The area around Sancerre combines vineyard slopes with the Loire’s alluvial plain, grain fields and extensive woodlands. The landscape is complemented by a historic townscape: Sancerre preserves important examples of 15th- and 16th-century civic architecture. The Pyramid Barn Trail leads to eight barns visible from the road. The route is 77 kilometres long and can be travelled by bike, car or on foot. This means you can choose from several ways to explore the barns.
Wine and regional specialities offer their own ways to explore the area. In the Grand Sancerrois, wine tastings, cellar visits and wine tourism experiences are part of what is on offer around Sancerre wine. You can discover Crottin de Chavignol through farm visits and tastings; it can also be paired with Sancerre wines. The Maison des Sancerre complements these experiences as an interpretation centre for the appellation’s wines. It is not just about the taste, but also about getting to know the wines and their appellation in greater depth.
Cultural landmarks and industrial heritage
Bourges Cathedral offers a striking insight into Gothic architecture; its construction spanned the late 12th to the late 13th century. Espace Métal offers a different historical focus: it is a heritage interpretation centre exploring the beginnings of the first Industrial Revolution. It is housed in a former coal hall classified as a historic monument. The shift from medieval sacred architecture to industrial history broadens the view of cultural discoveries in Cher.
Whether you are interested in nature experiences, historic architecture, regional produce or a trip on the water, the offerings each have their own focus. You can explore individual themes in greater depth or combine different perspectives on the landscape and history.
