The Vauvise flows through Sancergues and joins the Loire near Sancerre after 54 kilometres. Together with the marshes and the paths through fields and forests, it shapes a stay where the landscape and history come to life through specific themes. The N151 also runs through the town, linking Auxerre to Châteauroux via Bourges.

The Vauvise, Park and Marshes

In the town centre there is a wooded park whose design is shaped by the bends of the Vauvise. It is ideal for walking, picnicking and fishing. On the banks of the Vauvise, the Marais de Sancergues now offers idyllic walks. The two places offer different experiences: the park brings together several leisure activities, while the marshes are primarily a place for riverside walks.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the marshes served as communal pastureland. Later, they were drained by ditches connected to the drainage ditches of the medieval town centre. This history gives the landscape a connection not only to its former use and the development of its drainage system, but also to its present-day character as a place for walks.

Walks through Fields and Forests

Two walks are signposted around Sancergues, including the “Les Points” route; check access before setting out. The walk to Château de Sarré passes through grain fields and along farm tracks. The Bois d’Augy and Bois des Usages de Marciau offer a different kind of landscape: the two forests cover a total of 41 hectares and are recommended for mushroom picking and woodland walks. The open farmland on the walk to the château thus contrasts with the forest areas recommended for walks and mushroom picking.

Pilgrimage History and Heritage

The Via Lemovicensis passes through Sancergues and is a historic pilgrimage route from Vézelay to Santiago de Compostela. The Église Saint-Jacques-et-Saint-Cyr is protected as a historic monument; the decree is dated 24 February 1926. Nearby is La Charité-sur-Loire, a town of art and history. Since 1998, its Notre-Dame church has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site as an important stop on the Way of St James. The pilgrimage route through Sancergues and the nearby World Heritage Site are two distinct points of interest.

The Université rurale entre Loire et Vauvise offers a cultural programme featuring conferences, exhibitions, heritage tours, discovery outings, music classes, concerts, and musical and artistic events. Individual offerings and dates vary.

Albert Bourlon and the Sancerguois Landscape

The “N°06 – Dans la roue d’Albert Bourlon” route passes through the Sancerguois landscape, with marshland, forests and open fields. It follows Albert Bourlon’s training and race routes and recalls his 253-kilometre solo breakaway in the 1947 Tour de France. In this way, the route connects its description of the landscape with a specific episode in cycling history.
