Jars can be explored from different perspectives: the church of Saint-Aignan represents religious Renaissance architecture, the pyramidal barn reflects a rural building tradition of the Pays Fort, and the former weaver’s house offers a glimpse into the history of weaving. Hiking and horse-riding trails also cross the entire commune. When planning a stay, you can make architectural history and outdoor activities your own particular interests. For a specific hike, the Bois de la Passe circular trail offers two distances and an approximate duration.
Church of Saint-Aignan and the Renaissance
The church of Saint-Aignan in Jars is essentially a 16th-century building. It is one of the few religious Renaissance buildings in the Cher department. Locally, it is known as the “little cathedral of the Pays Fort”; this nickname adds a local description to its architectural classification. At the church, you can therefore encounter both a specific art-historical classification and a local name expressing its connection to the Pays Fort.
Pyramidal barn and traditional crafts
The pyramidal barn belongs to a rural building tradition of the Pays Fort in the north of the Cher department that is unique in France. It retains most of its original features, including a large roof, a timber frame supported by posts, a central threshing floor, a sheepfold, feed troughs and storage areas in the upper section. The surviving features therefore range from the building’s construction to its individual functional spaces. The barn can still be visited; check access before your visit.
Another testament to the history of buildings and crafts is the former weaver’s house and its associated mill. It was listed as a historic monument by decree on 19 September 1966. The stone cellar of the former weaver’s house once housed looms. Together with the church and the barn, the building offers another perspective on Jars: here, the focus is on former weaving, while the other sites highlight religious or rural architecture.
Walking trails and views
Hiking and horse-riding trails cross the entire commune of Jars. If you are planning a specific route, you can choose the Bois de la Passe circular trail. It starts at Plan d'eau de la Balance and is described as an easy hike of 4 or 8 kilometres, taking about two hours. The two distances let you choose the length of your walk, while the approximate duration helps you gauge the effort involved. Along the way, the route offers views of the Sauldre Valley and the centre of Jars. As local trail conditions can change, check them before setting off.
Leisure activities at Plan d'eau de la Balance
Plan d'eau de la Balance has a mini-golf course and outdoor games for children. There is also a fitness trail and tennis courts. The activities cater to different interests: games, exercise and tennis are available here, alongside the option of planning a hike. If you want to include a particular facility in your plans, check its current availability in advance, as leisure activities may change.
