Massay is shaped by two distinct sides: the monastic heritage of Abbaye Saint-Martin and the protected landscape of Pelouse de Grand Vau. It also has named hiking trails, a fishing lake and Route 235, which connects Massay with several other towns. These features offer clear pointers when choosing where to stay: culture and architecture, nature and outdoor activities, or time by the water.
Abbey of Saint-Martin: Architectural History and Visits
The Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Martin was founded in 738. Massay’s historic heritage is classified as part of the “Sites clunésiens”; the Ancienne abbaye Saint-Martin is protected both as a classified and as a registered historic monument. Abbaye Saint-Martin preserves a church dating from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries, with stained-glass windows.
The architectural complex also includes the chapter house. Its six ribbed vaults rest on two round columns in the center. The hall was classified as a historic monument by decree on 4 February 1915. The Chapel of Saint-Loup dates from the mid-12th century and offers another historic landmark for those interested in religious architecture.
Abbaye Saint-Martin can be visited year-round as part of a guided tour; registration is handled by Massay Town Hall. Register in advance and confirm the visiting arrangements before your arrival.
Pelouse de Grand Vau: Dry Grassland by the Wetland
Pelouse de Grand Vau is designated as an Espace naturel sensible of the Cher Department and forms part of the Natura 2000 site “Îlots de marais et coteaux calcaires au Nord-Ouest de la Champagne Berrichonne,” SAC No. FR2400531. The site is a calcareous, thermophilous dry grassland located along the Herbon stream above a wetland. It is also home to a species-rich community of thermophilous plants. These described site features give nature enthusiasts a specific idea of what to look out for.
Pelouse de Grand Vau is publicly accessible via a municipal path. Check access arrangements locally before your visit.
Hiking or Fishing
The Circuit du Grand Vau is a walking trail in Massay. The “Boucle n°18 – sur la voie de Cluny” hiking route is also connected with Massay. Both names offer a starting point for planning a hike, without committing you to a particular type of outing.
For anglers, the municipal fishing lake Plan d’eau Les Pâtureaux de Sailly is another way to spend time outdoors. The lake covers 5 ha and is 1.5 km long; it is classified as a second-category fishing water. It is a fishing association lake and is open to members of the 50 AAPPMA associations in the Cher Department as well as the 91 EHGO, CHI and URNE associations. Membership and access rules may change depending on the season. Check the current regulations before fishing.
Getting There on Route 235
Route 235 connects Graçay with Vierzon via Massay, Nohant-en-Graçay, Reboursin, Saint-Hilaire-de-Court and Vatan. If you want to plan your arrival or onward journey around this connection, check the current timetable in advance: routes and times may change.
