Menetou-Salon can be explored through its Château history, vineyards and walking trails. Other options include the Musée de l’Automobile and a range of activities. These themes offer different perspectives: local history and architecture sit alongside wine, while walks and fishing offer other ways to plan your day.

Château History and Cultural Heritage

The Château de Menetou-Salon was extended between 1884 and 1891. Paul Ernest Sanson carried out the work, taking inspiration from the Palais Jacques Cœur. The connection to this building makes the extension a specific point of interest for architecture enthusiasts. An earlier milestone concerns the Domaine de Menetou-Salon: it was sold to Jacques Cœur in 1448.

The cultural heritage trail is two kilometres long and takes around 45 minutes. Its 14 information panels cover the history of the municipality, and their content may be updated. A visit to the Château takes an average of 1 hour and 15 minutes, although visiting arrangements may change. At around 45 minutes, the trail is shorter than the average château visit. If you plan to take in both cultural attractions, check the Château’s visiting arrangements in advance.

The Musée de l’Automobile adds another cultural dimension: its role in preserving automotive heritage reflects the commitment of the Princes of Arenberg.

Winegrowing in the Village

The Menetou-Salon winegrowing area was granted Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée status in 1959; Menetou-Salon is one of the communes of origin for these wines. This distinguishes the appellation’s regional scope from its specific connection to the village.

The Domaine Viticole du Prince et Duc d’ARENBERG is in the heart of the village, opposite the Château de Menetou-Salon. When visiting the Château, a tasting of the wines of the Domaine du Prince d’Arenberg may be a fitting way to finish, subject to availability.

The “Prince & Duc d’ARENBERG” cuvée is sold exclusively in the Château boutique. If you are specifically looking for this cuvée, check whether it is available before you travel; do not assume you will be able to buy it.

Walking Trails and Outdoor Activities

A municipal bulletin listed at least six marked walking trails in 2024, ranging from two to 23 kilometres in length. The GR31 passes through Menetou-Salon and offers another option as a long-distance trail. The marked trails of varying lengths and a named long-distance route offer different ways to plan a walk.

Fishing at the Étang communal de Farges is possible with annual or day permits. Rules and seasons may change; check the current conditions before your visit.

Bell Fourche City offers Western riding, an introduction to black powder shooting and lasso handling. Participation arrangements may change; enquire in advance.
