Menetou-Râtel lies in a transition zone between the bocage landscape of Pays-Fort, the Champagne plain and the Sancerrois wine-growing area. These three landscape regions give the village a varied setting. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up whether the landscape and walking trails or the historic buildings should play a greater role in your stay. The oldest buildings are clustered around the parish church.

Landscape between three regions

The terrain around Menetou-Râtel is complex. Its features include green hills, small cultivated valleys, scattered hedgerows and patches of woodland. Land consolidation has so far made little difference to the landscape. At 375 metres, Montagne des Marnes is the highest point in Menetou-Râtel. It is a clearly identifiable landmark in the landscape extending across the three distinct regions.

Walking and cycling routes

Several marked hiking trails lead to Montagne des Marnes. The Boucle de Menetou hiking route starts in the village centre and passes over the mountain. If having a named starting point matters to you, this route offers a clear reference: it begins in the village and goes over the highest point. Signage and trail conditions may change, so check the information before setting off.

A cycling route also starts in Menetou-Râtel: Le Menetou Rathon Sancerrois is a road-cycling circuit. Check the route information independently before relying on it for your ride. This lets you consider two different ways of getting around when planning, without assuming any connection between the routes.

Church and architectural traces

The oldest buildings in Menetou-Râtel stand around the parish church. Église Saint-Martin has several clearly dated architectural features: its entrance portal and nave date from the late 11th or early 12th century. The church also contains two engraved limestone tomb slabs. One dates from the late 15th century, the other from the late 17th century. Their different dates offer a glimpse into several phases of the building’s history and furnishings.

The choice of materials at the Benedictine priory stands out: it is built of black sandstone, known as black stone, while the window surrounds are made of limestone. The building and its windows thus feature two different materials. For architecture enthusiasts, this detail complements the dating of Église Saint-Martin with a specific note about the priory’s construction.

Cheese, wine and other interests

Ferme des Chapotons sells Crottin de Chavignol and offers tastings. If you are planning a visit, it is best to check the arrangements in advance. B. Fleuriet et Fils offers another aspect of the wine scene: the winery has been certified organic since 2016, and concrete is one of its preferred materials for winemaking in the cellar.

Menetou-Râtel is also home to an equestrian centre called Écurie des Mangues. Along with the walking trails and road-cycling circuit, this adds to the range of things you can consider when choosing a destination.
