At Sangstrup, white, vertical chalk cliffs rise abruptly from the mainland. This striking coastal landscape is a starting point for the varied discoveries in Norddjurs Municipality: along 117 kilometres of coastline, landscapes and trails meet museums, manor-house history and experiences centred on nature and food.

Chalk Coast, Beaches and Nature

At Karlby Klint and Sangstrup Klint, you can see and find fossil bryozoans for yourself. Nature enthusiasts will also find mapped trails in Norddjurs that can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. A continuous cycle path runs along the former railway line between RyomgĂĽrd and AllingĂĽbro. It connects Gjerrildbanestien with Gjerrild and with the network of recreational trails between Norddjurs and Syddjurs.

The beaches listed by Norddjurs as having Blue Flag status include Bønnerup Strand, Fjellerup Strand, Gjerrild Nordstrand, Grenaa Strand, Rygürde Strand and St. Sjørup Strand. As awards are reviewed annually, check the current status before your trip. Rygürde Strand is accessible with reduced mobility; as beach facilities can change, please check current access conditions in advance.

Birdwatching is another of the region’s nature experiences. In Randers Fjord Nature Park, with a bit of luck, you can spot ospreys flying over the fjord and seals on rocks and sandbanks near Udbyhøj. You can also take a trip through extensive reed beds there. Forest birds such as black woodpeckers, great spotted woodpeckers, stock doves and ravens breed in Gjerrild Overskov; migratory birds also stop there. In some years, red-backed shrikes breed there too. Gjerrild and Fornæs are considered particularly good places to watch bird migration.

The Kyst- og Fjordcentret, an activity-based nature interpretation centre, is located by the water in Randers Fjord Nature Park. Kattegatcentret offers a different perspective on wildlife: it features more than 200 species of marine animals, including sharks, grey seals and penguins.

Discover Manor-House Life and Agriculture

Gammel Estrup has a history stretching back almost 700 years and has been a museum since 1930. Its focus is the changing lives of estate owners and servants over time. The history also comes to life in the authentic manor-house kitchen, where coffee and homemade cake are served. The kitchen features an old wood-burning stove and original recipes.

Bus route 212 goes directly to Gammel Estrup Museum; public bus stops are about 100 metres away. As routes and timetables can change, check them before travelling. This makes it easy to plan a museum visit without having to combine it with a fixed sightseeing itinerary.

The Grønne Museum is Denmark’s national museum of hunting, forestry, agriculture and food. It combines exhibitions with a playground, farm animals, living agriculture and the historic surroundings of Gammel Estrup. At Madens Hus, visitors can get hands-on with the history of food: they can taste, smell and literally chop their way through history. These practical experiences complement the exhibition themes.

Mills, Moorland and Regional Trails

At Stenvad Mosebrugscenter, you can take a narrow-gauge railway through the picturesque moorland. Stenvad Mosebrug is an important part of Danish industrial history: originally, it was a large, busy factory where many workers extracted peat from the surrounding moors. This glimpse into the area’s former use differs from the manor-house history at Gammel Estrup and the agricultural themes of the Grønne Museum.

Architecture and art offer their own distinct highlights. The Grenaa branch of Museum Østjylland is housed in a former merchant’s courtyard, built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Baunhøj Mølle is one of Norddjurs Municipality’s cultural landmarks. The mill is operational and hosts various art exhibitions.

There are several walking routes, each following a different course. Nordsøstien is a signposted regional walking trail in Norddjurs. Lodsstien is about 32 kilometres long and runs from Udbyhøj Syd, at the entrance to Randers Fjord, to Randers Harbour. The coastal Djurslandstien runs from Risskov in Aarhus to Udbyhøj in Norddjursland. These routes offer different perspectives on the area; Lodsstien’s length and endpoints are particularly clearly specified.
