Glesborg has bus connections, grocery stores and other shops. A striking cultural landmark is Glesborg Kirke, often called the “Cathedral of Djursland”: it is larger than most village churches. Outside the town, too, there are various natural and cultural attractions that offer different ways to shape your travel plans.
Church architecture, paintings and history
Glesborg Kirke can be viewed through its several phases of construction. Its Romanesque nave is made of granite; the chancel, tower and porch were added in the late Middle Ages. Inside the church, wall paintings depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments, from Jesus’s adult life and from his childhood. Other subjects depicted include everyday life, the Last Judgment, the Creation and the Fall. Those interested in church art will find both architectural details and a wide range of imagery here.
Egehøj represents a much older period: the Bronze Age burial mound and settlement site is located at 8585 Glesborg. Events held in Glesborg include a summer festival and a flea market. If you are planning your trip around one of these events, check the dates in advance.
The history of the buildings is also visible at Meilgaard Slotskro. It is housed in the estate’s former carriage entrance and stables. Many details have been preserved, including elaborately decorated wrought-iron horse stalls. Meilgaard Slotspark lies next to the white castle building; concerts are occasionally held there. Check the dates if you want a concert to be part of your stay.
Forest trails and coastal destinations
Meilgaard Gods has an extensive network of trails, with various routes through the forest. The forest is notable for its wide variety of tree species and landscapes, as well as its large population of red deer. The trails and the character of the forest offer two different aspects to consider when planning a day outdoors.
The nearby beaches also differ in the features described. Bønnerup Strand Øst is about 1.8 kilometres long and consists mainly of sand, with only a few stones. Nearby Fjellerup Strand offers opportunities for swimming and fishing, as well as access to kilometres of coastline. Bønnerup therefore stands out for its length and surface, while Fjellerup is noted for swimming and fishing opportunities and its coastal stretches.
The area around Glesborg offers good opportunities for cycling. A nature trail along the former Gjerrild railway runs near the basic campsite in Glesborg. The basic campsite by Glesborgs Bypark has two shelters. If you are considering this type of accommodation, check the shelters’ availability in advance.
Practical information
Bus connections and shops provide practical information for a stay in town. Check the timetable before departure for specific bus journeys. Meilgaard Skovbegravelsesplads is open from 6 a.m. until sunset; visitors are free to move around the grounds.
