Ramten brings together two lakes, a landscape of marshland, meadows and fields, and specific nature and cultural themes. Dystrup Sø is one of the most important birdwatching sites on Djursland; Huldremose adds an archaeological dimension. The Femte Maj Stenen memorial stone provides a distinctive local landmark. This makes it easy to explore the area according to your interests.
Comparing Dystrup Sø and Ramten Sø
Dystrup Sø covers 26 hectares and has an average depth of 1 metre. Ramten Sø covers 29 hectares and has an average depth of 1.2 metres. In direct comparison, Ramten Sø is therefore 3 hectares larger and 0.2 metres deeper. The two lakes are of a similar size in terms of area; Ramten Sø has somewhat higher figures for both measurements. These figures provide an objective reference if you would like to compare the two lakes.
Landscape and the Gjerrildbanestien trail
The landscape around Ramten Sø and Dystrup Sø combines marshland, meadows, semi-natural grassland and cultivated fields. You can take it in from the smaller surrounding roads and from the Gjerrildbanestien trail. The trail runs through Ramten and along the western shore of Ramten Sø; there are several benches there, though their availability may change. The roads offer views of the landscape around both lakes, while the trail focuses on a specific stretch of lakeshore. This gives you two different ways to explore the area: the wider landscape and the named section along the lake.
Birdlife and history at Huldremose
Dystrup Sø is one of the most important birdwatching sites on Djursland. Birdlife is therefore one of Ramten’s distinctive nature themes. Huldremose offers a different perspective: the marsh is small, shallow and partly overgrown. It is also where a bog body from the Iron Age was discovered in 1879. Here, the description of a specific habitat meets an archaeological find site. The year refers to the discovery, while the Iron Age places the find in its historical context.
Protection and local remembrance
Dystrup Sø and Ramten Sø are covered by a protection designation encompassing a total of 190 hectares. This total refers to the protected area; it is not the area of either individual lake. The 190 hectares can therefore be distinguished from the lakes’ respective areas of 26 and 29 hectares. Another link to the area’s history is the Femte Maj Stenen memorial stone in Ramten. It stands at the corner of P. Madsensvej and Savværksvej. This precise street-corner location provides a clear reference point if you would like to include the stone in your plans for the area.
Ramten as a destination when looking for accommodation
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what you would most like to focus on: do you want lakes and birdlife to be at the heart of your stay, or would you also like to explore the marshland and local history? Ramten brings together these different themes, but each stay can have its own focus. You can then choose accommodation to suit your personal needs and travel plans.
