Selkær can be understood through its distinctive landscape and historical associations. At its centre is Selkær Enge, a raised bog between Selkær and Kastbjerg, west of Grenå. Its low elevation, bowl-shaped profile and various waterways provide specific geographical reference points; a burial mound and the former district court site add historical dimensions to the picture. The holiday-home area near Selkær Mølle can also be identified by its location and is a separate point of reference when looking for accommodation.
Selkær Enge and the wider landscape
Selkær Enge is a raised bog area between Selkær and Kastbjerg, west of Grenå. It lies at a low elevation and has a bowl-shaped profile. The location describes where the bog lies; the two terrain descriptions clarify its form. Thus, landscape type, elevation and profile are presented side by side, rather than simply as interchangeable names for the same feature. The proposed 2025 municipal plan also places the larger raised bog area near Selkær within the Veggerslev-Ådal landscape. Selkær Enge can therefore be understood both as a specific area and in the context of a broader landscape.
Waterways with different courses
Selkær Bæk crosses Selkær Enge from north to south and is a public watercourse. The bog also drains south towards Kolindsund. Both details point in the same compass direction, but describe different spatial relationships: the stream runs through the area, while the drainage direction connects the bog to its outlet. Selkær Gl. Å begins in Kastbjerg and flows into Selkær Bæk. It is older than the Bæk, so the two watercourses can be described in terms of both a connection and a difference in age. A little west of Grenå, Skærved Å flows into Kolindsund and onwards to the Kattegat. This information about the river extends the view beyond the bog and adds another watercourse to the geographical picture.
Burial mound and court site
Rundhøj, Selkjær, is a grass-covered burial mound on cultivated land. The grass cover and land use may change. Another historical reference is the district court site: it was located near Selkær for a time and later at Skindbjerg. This sequence places Selkær as the earlier location and Skindbjerg as the later one. Together, the burial mound and court site represent two different historical points of reference: a burial monument in the landscape and a court function that moved between locations over time.
