There are several different themes to choose from for a stay in Auning: church history and manor houses, cooking in historic kitchens, and nature and a trail with archaeological traces. If you are looking for accommodation, it helps to start by asking which of these themes you want to shape your stay. They range from a Romanesque church interior to a protected natural area, offering different starting points for planning.

Church and manor house: two historical perspectives

In the northern part of Auning stands the old medieval Auning Church. Its oldest section dates from the 12th century and is a Romanesque church interior. For more than 400 years, the church served as the manor church for the owners of Gammel Estrup.

Gammel Estrup is one of Denmark’s best-preserved Renaissance manor houses. Its historic interiors show how the estate’s owners and servants lived over a period of 400 years. These offer different perspectives: the church highlights its Romanesque oldest section and historical function, while Gammel Estrup focuses on the living conditions portrayed in its interiors.

A museum covering several themes

At the Green Museum, visitors can experience hunting, forestry, agriculture and food in a single museum. The museum offers groups several options for guided tours and educational activities. Those planning their stay around a particular theme will find a different focus here than in the history of the church and manor house.

Cooking in historic kitchens

MADENS HUS offers culinary experiences all year round for families, groups and companies. Participants can cook in four authentic historic kitchens, making the cooking itself a tangible part of the experience. When choosing a format, keep in mind that at MADENS HUS you cook for yourself, while the Green Museum offers groups guided tours and educational activities.

Companies, associations and other larger groups can book cooking classes in the historic kitchens. Availability may change. If you are planning to take a class, check current availability in advance.

Nature area and Banestien

Porsbakkerne is a 10-hectare protected natural area. Banestien offers a different perspective on the landscape and history: it connects Allingåbro and Auning, and three burial mounds registered as protected archaeological monuments lie along the trail. This offers a choice between two different interests: the protected area as a nature attraction, and the trail with its connection between the towns and its archaeological traces.

A practical planning detail

Auning swimming pool has lifts in the changing rooms and at the teaching pool and warm-water pool. If you are taking this facility into account when planning, confirm its availability before you travel.
