Allingåbro combines a railway past that is still clearly visible with routes to explore on foot, by bike, on a rail bike and by canoe. When planning, it helps to understand how these options differ: the Banestien is a paved cycling and walking route, the rail-bike ride follows the Randers Fjord, and you can rent canoes on the Alling Å or the Grund Fjord. There is also a Romanesque church and a workshop museum.

Railway heritage, a church and a workshop museum

Passenger services on the railway line from Allingåbro ended in 1971; freight services continued until 1993. The station area is still relatively well preserved. It includes a station building, a warehouse and a toilet building, as well as railway tracks with various technical facilities. The two dates mark different phases in the railway’s history: passenger and freight services did not end at the same time.

The Veteranbil Værkstedsmuseet is located at the disused railway station. Visitors can see and experience what a workshop looked like 50 years ago and how cars from the 1930s to the 1960s were repaired. Vejlby Church near Allingåbro offers a different historical perspective: the Romanesque church dates from the 12th century. Inside, you can see rounded arches, star vaults and colourful decorative murals.

Routes and water around Allingåbro

The Banestien between Allingåbro and Ryomgård is 15 kilometres long, paved and designed as a cycling and walking route. It passes through woodland and farmland. The rail-bike ride starts at the old railway station in Allingåbro and follows the Randers Fjord through forests and across open fields towards Randers; the route can be up to 16 kilometres long. The routes are of a similar length, but differ mainly in how you travel and the landscapes described.

A municipal report dated 26 March 2026 lists a total of 99 light poles along the Banestien. According to the report, they switch on automatically when movement is detected, making the route safer and more pleasant to use.

The water also offers opportunities in the area: the designated area of Randers Fjord Nature Park extends around the Alling Å in Allingåbro, where landing places for small boats have been established. One suggested canoe trip goes from Allingåbro to Gammel Estrup and back. It is about ten kilometres long and takes approximately two hours, not including breaks. Djursland for Fuld Damp rents canoes for trips on the Alling Å or the Grund Fjord. Canoe rentals are available seasonally. Allow for breaks when estimating the tour duration, and check whether rentals are available at the time of your visit.
