Discover Grenå through three distinct themes: local history, water and nature. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether exhibitions and historic sites, activities on the water, or paths through forest and heath should shape your stay. Specific experiences include an exhibition on the history of North Djursland and a canoe route on the Grenaa Å.
Cultural history, architecture and live performances
The permanent exhibition at Museum Østjylland Grenaa explores the history of North Djursland over a period of 10,000 years, with digital installations as a complement. The Lydvandring i August Kroghs fodspor offers a more focused biographical perspective: it follows August Krogh’s upbringing in Grenaa in the late 19th century across seven stops. Grenaa Kirke was built from bricks around 1300.
These historical themes offer different perspectives: the museum spans a broad period of time, the Lydvandring focuses on one person and the late 19th century, while the church highlights architectural history around 1300. This lets you choose between a broad overview, a biographical theme and architecture when planning your cultural activities.
In Nederstræde, a side street off Lillegade in Grenaa, a charming street lined with picturesque, well-preserved half-timbered houses has been preserved. Baunhøj Mølle in Grenaa hosts changing art exhibitions. Kulturhuset Pavillonen offers theatre, musicals, comedy, visual arts and live music—providing a range of cultural options, from exhibitions to stage performances.
Water, beach and harbour
Kattegatcentret is home to 200 different animal species from around the world. Sharks are trained and fed daily in the tropical shark tank. The calm waters at Grenaa Strand are well suited to children, surfers and SUP enthusiasts. The shallow inner section is considered particularly suitable for SUP. Grenaa Strand was awarded the Blue Flag in 2026; check again for later years to see whether it has retained the award.
The Grenaa Å flows through Grenaa, is about seven kilometres long and empties into the Kattegat at Grenaa Havn. Canoeists can paddle from the town centre at Gasværksvej to Enslevgården. Check the booking information for the canoe trip in advance. Ferries run daily from Grenaa Havn to the island of Anholt and to Halmstad in Sweden; check the timetables before travelling.
Forest, heath and trails
Grenaa Plantage combines woodland with large areas of heath characterised by heather and juniper. It has hiking and cycling routes, a nature playground and a singletrack mountain biking trail described as Denmark’s longest.
The Kløverstierne trails in Grenaa pass through the town’s streets and lanes, along the Grenaaen river, through the plantation and into the open countryside at the tip of Djursland. When choosing a route, it’s useful to know the difference: the Kløverstierne pass through several of the landscapes described here, while the plantation routes are suitable for hiking and cycling in an area characterised by woodland and heath.
On the Hjemstavn Podwalk in Grenaa Plantage, visitors scan a QR code and listen to local voices as they walk. Check before your trip whether the experience is available. Grenaa Naturskole runs public tours throughout the year.
