Nissum Fjord is designated as an international bird protection area. Large flocks of migratory birds gather around the fjord in spring and autumn. This makes two specific seasons the focus for a stay near Skalstrup. Windsurfing is another option on the fjord, depending on the weather.
Fjord, beaches and water
There are several small, child-friendly sandy beaches with shallow water near Skalstrup on Nissum Fjord and in the surrounding area. Beach conditions can vary by season. Near Skalstrup, there is access to Nissum Fjord at the mouth of the Damhus Ă…. This means different water-based options are close together: beaches, access at the river mouth, and the opportunity to go windsurfing. When choosing when to visit, it is worth considering the beach and windsurfing separately: seasonal changes affect beach conditions, while the possibility of windsurfing depends on the weather on the fjord.
Forest trails and routes
Skalstrup Skov is about 1 km north of Nissum Fjord. There are two hiking trails in the forest: one is 3 km long and the other is 5.3 km. If you prefer a shorter walk, you can compare the two trails by length. The shorter of the two forest trails is 3 km long; the longer one measures 5.3 km.
Another marked route runs between Harpøth Havn and Damhus Å Havn and is about 4 km long in total. The starting points listed are Damhus Å Havn, Harpøth Havn and Sandbæk Næs. So alongside the two forest trails, there is also a route with three possible starting points to choose from.
The forest’s origins are also part of the local history: Skalstrup Skov was one of four new, larger forests established between 1991 and 1997. Each of these four forests covered 125 to 155 ha. Skalstrup Skov also has a forest playground.
Harbours and practical local amenities
At Harpøt Havn, also spelled Harpøth Havn, you can swim and use a barbecue area. The harbour was built in 2001. Boat owners can launch their boats there and head out onto Nissum Fjord. At Damhus Å Harbour, there are shelters, a campfire site and a picnic house. The two harbours therefore offer different ways to enjoy a stay by the water.
The Skalstrup Skov campsite has a shelter with space for 7 to 9 people. The holiday home area near Skalstrup is on the eastern side of Nissum Fjord and offers easy access to the water. If proximity to the water is a criterion when choosing accommodation, this location is a useful reference point for your search.
