Harboøre Church was first mentioned around 1330; its first stone church may have been built as early as around 1200. The area around Harboøre also offers brackish lagoons, birdwatching and signposted hiking trails. Here, you can experience different sides of the destination: church history and sea rescue, as well as landscapes and trails.

Church, Cemetery and Sea Rescue

Harboøre Church features a Renaissance altarpiece from 1605; the present-day painting was created by Axel Hou in 1910. Together with the church’s early mention and the possible construction date of its first stone church, these provide several points of reference in time. They point to different layers of history: the early building history, the altarpiece and the later creation of the present-day painting.

The church’s decoration and some of the gravestones in the historic cemetery also tell of drowning accidents that have shaped the parish over time. This remembrance gives the local history a solemn maritime dimension. The church and cemetery offer a different perspective from the history of sea rescue.

Flyvholm Rescue Station was founded in 1847 and was one of Denmark’s first rescue stations. It is an unstaffed exhibition building operated by Lemvig Museum. The station displays the large rescue boat that the crew had to row through rough surf. Its founding year places the station in its historical context, while the boat makes its historic work tangible through a specific object.

Lagoons, Birdwatching and Hiking Trails

The two brackish lagoons of Harboøre Tange cover 500 hectares in the area around Harboøre. They are important breeding grounds for various waterbirds. A birdwatching hide is located 600 metres south of Rønland Station, offering views of the birds in the lagoon. The lagoons define the landscape, while the hide provides a specific viewpoint for observing the birds.

The national hiking route Vestkyststien runs along the coastal dike for the entire length of Harboøre Tange. In the area, Naturrum Thyborøn has signposted two hiking trails of 4 and 11 kilometres. When planning your route, you can choose between these two distances: the shorter is 4 kilometres, and the longer is 11. Vestkyststien, by contrast, is distinguished by its route along the dike across the Tange. Markings and trail conditions may change, so check the latest information before setting out.

The viewing pier at Naturrum Thyborøn is accessible to people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check current accessibility before your visit. Bunker No. 55 offers a different kind of break: you can rest there, eat food you have brought along or spend the night in a hammock you bring yourself. So, you will need to bring your own hammock if you plan to stay overnight.
