Discover Ferring through three distinct themes: coastal landscapes, routes around Ferring Sø, and art and history. Bovbjerg Profilet stretches for several kilometres, while the museum, lighthouse and church each offer their own cultural points of interest. When planning your stay, consider whether you are most interested in the coast, outdoor activities, or local art and history.
Coastal cliffs and routes around Ferring
Bovbjerg Profilet is a coastal cliff on the west coast of Jutland. It stretches for 6 km from Ferring in the north to Fjaltring in the south. The main section is the stretch of just over 3 km from Ferring to Trans Kirke. The figures therefore describe two different scales: the full extent of Profilet and its main section. Layers from the Elster, Saale and Weichsel glaciations have been found in Bovbjerg Profilet. This makes the coast a subject of geological as well as scenic interest.
The routes also have different histories and serve different purposes today. The former Tipvognstrecke from Ferring to Bovbjerg Fyr is paved and continues along the coast to Trans Kirke. The route between Ferring Sø and the North Sea was once a railway for small material wagons and is now a cycle path. There is also a walking trail around Ferring Sø, passing through a variety of landscapes and natural environments.
Art and history in different places
Jens Søndergaards Museum is located at the far edge of the cliff at Ferring. It houses some of the artist’s major works as well as lesser-known paintings and drawings. Drawing materials are available among the artworks, allowing visitors to create their own pieces. The museum therefore offers both the opportunity to view Søndergaard’s art and to enjoy a creative activity of your own.
Bovbjerg Fyr was built in 1877 as one of the first lighthouses on the Danish west coast. The lighthouse houses an exhibition about former lighthouse keepers, life in the lighthouse and the many shipwrecks along the coast. A new art exhibition is on display every two months. Guided tours and talks for groups are available on request; they cover the history of the lighthouse or the nature shaped by the Ice Age.
Ferring Kirke preserves a different aspect of history: remains of a large lime painting from around 1200 can be found on the north wall of the nave. It depicts scenes from the childhood and life of Jesus. The painting’s approximate date and the construction of the lighthouse in 1877 point to very different historical periods; the museum and art exhibitions add a distinct artistic focus.
Ferring Sø and the bathing season
At Ferring Sø, you can consider different activities on the same body of water: a walking trail around the lake passes through a variety of landscapes and natural environments. Fishing with a rod is open to everyone from the municipal shoreline area or from the floating jetty in front of it. Local fishing rules may change, so check them before fishing.
Ferring is among the beaches in Lemvig Municipality awarded the Blue Flag for the bathing season from 1 June to 31 August. As the status may change from season to season, check the award status for the bathing season of your trip. Together with the routes, coastal profile and cultural sites, this provides a practical basis for choosing Ferring according to the themes you want to shape your stay.
