Klosterheden Plantation is home to Denmark’s largest beaver population, with nearly 200 animals. Eighteen beavers were released there in 1999. The population may change over time. The plantation is also home to one of Denmark’s largest red deer populations; numbers fluctuate seasonally.
Cycling routes with different profiles
The mountain bike route through Klosterheden Plantation is 50 kilometres long, half of which consists of singletrack. It can be shortened to a western section of 34 kilometres or an eastern section of approximately 28 kilometres. The 44-kilometre panoramic cycling route “Himmel, hav og kunst” offers a different surface: it follows country roads, gravel roads and paths and is signposted throughout as “409 Panoramarute”. This lets you distinguish the cycling routes by their profile: singletrack defines the MTB route, while the panoramic route connects different types of surface. Route layouts and signage may be updated; check them before setting out.
Walking: from a city stroll to birdwatching
For walks and hikes in the town of Lemvig, the municipality has published a brochure with ten routes. It includes detailed maps and overview maps of all the town’s public paths. The marked Planetstien is twelve kilometres long; shorter options take you as far as Saturn and Neptune. Along the route, the solar system is depicted at a scale of one to one billion. Trail conditions may vary.
The Sundhedssporet offers a different time and distance: the route is 1,350 metres long and mostly flat. It takes about 15 minutes to walk, or around seven to ten minutes to run, depending on fitness. This lets you compare a longer walking route with a short route for which specific times are provided, without assigning an unlisted walking time to Planetstien.
At Naturrum Thyborøn, you can choose between two walking routes of four and eleven kilometres. Information boards along the way share facts about nature and culture. The longer route passes a birdwatching hide, where you can observe waterfowl, waders and birds of prey. Which birds you see naturally varies; trail conditions and facilities may also change.
Town history, art and mills
At Lemvig Museum, the exhibition on the history of the market town of Lemvig covers the period from the Middle Ages to the present day. The exhibition “Vestjylland og verden” uses objects to show connections between the Lemvig region and the rest of the world in the 18th and 19th centuries. The two themes have different focuses: one looks at the town’s development over a long period, while the other explores its regional connections across two centuries. The presentation may evolve. At the museum, you can also discover Henning Gantriis’ world of the comic strip “Livets gang i Lidenlund”, which is set in Lemvig.
Iskunsten is a permanent exhibition venue for ice sculptures and ice art, and is open year-round. The exhibition themes, and the sculptures along with them, change several times a year. Historic watermills are also worth discovering: Kjærgaard Mølle is located by Bredkær Bæk in Klosterheden Plantation. Aa-Mølle is a listed watermill near Nissum Bredning, around 500 years old. It lies in a moraine-edge area on raised seabed from the Ice Age.
Bovbjerg Fyr first began operating as a lighthouse in 1877. It stands near the edge of the 41-metre-high Bovbjerg Klint and offers views over the North Sea. The programme includes art exhibitions, talks, communal meals and walks; programme details may change.
Experiences on the water and on land
At JyllandsAkvariet, you can touch sharks in the touch pools, stroke rays along their backs and hold crabs. The dolphin safari heads into the Thyborøn Channel, where the North Sea and Limfjord meet. The aquarium also offers boat safaris to spot seals and dolphins. Wildlife sightings vary; tours are seasonal and subject to the operator’s schedule.
