In Lemvig, the offerings range from an exhibition on the town’s history to a scale model of the solar system. There is also art, interactive exhibitions and marked routes with varied themes and lengths. If you are considering Lemvig as a destination, you can choose what to focus on based on whether you are most interested in experiencing city history, culture or routes through the landscape.

City History, Church and Art

The exhibition “Lemvig Købstads historie” at Lemvig Museum covers the history of Lemvig from the Middle Ages to the present day and the relationship between the market town and its surrounding area. Other exhibitions focus on shipwrecks and rescue services, the rugged natural environment, and people who have lived in the Lemvig region for generations. This brings the history of the town, as well as the region’s natural environments and ways of life, into focus.

Lemvig Kirke also connects a specific place with a long history: it stands in the middle of the market square and has been considered a centre of local life since the 12th century. It acquired its present appearance through extensive renovation and expansion work between 1933 and 1935. This includes its distinctive onion-shaped spire.

Museet for Religiøs Kunst is a modern art museum with changing special exhibitions of contemporary and older art from Denmark and abroad. Topics include religion, mythology, the big questions of life, and art from and about Greenland. Films are shown daily at Biohuset Lemvig, usually at 17:30 and 20:00. Check the schedule before your trip. Concerts, lectures and other cultural events are also held there regularly.

Walks and Routes in Lemvig

The municipal walking guide includes ten walks in Lemvig By, along with stories about the town’s past and present. Detailed maps and overview maps of the public paths in town help you choose a route. “I Gantriis' Fodspor” is a route with a particular focus on the town’s history: this 2.7-kilometre walk leads to 17 marked stops through historic and urban settings. These include old buildings, alleyways with inns, the church square, shopping streets, the Kærlighedssti, densely built-up lanes and the harbour.

The Planetstien runs from the centre of Lemvig to Gjellerodde. It is laid out as a scale model of the solar system at a scale of 1:1 billion and represents the planets from the Sun to Pluto. The Skulpturstien offers a different perspective: the sculpture site includes 54 works by sculptor Torvald Westergaard (1901–1988). The route also leads to a staircase with 177 steps and views over the town of Lemvig and the harbour.

Those comparing routes by landscape and length will find further options. The 6.1-kilometre Hjertestien passes through woodland and open meadows to the Limfjord; it starts and ends at Lemvig Sø. There are marked walking routes of 4.5 or 6 kilometres around Lemvig Sødal. The Sødal itself is a tunnel valley formed by meltwater during the last Ice Age around 20,000 to 30,000 years ago; it extends from the town to flat heathland in the south. The distances indicate the length of the routes, while their themes range from urban areas to valley and fjord landscapes.

The 18-hole course at Lemvig Golfklub also offers a unique perspective on the surroundings, with views of Horn Sø, the Limfjord and the town of Lemvig.

Interactive Experiences

The exhibition “Klima uden grænser” at Klimatorium can be visited without a guide or an appointment; visits are subject to the current seasonal arrangements. In the interactive exhibition, children and adults explore climate challenges and solutions through play, technology and activities. Tante Andantes Hus in Lemvig is open to the public during school holidays; groups can book visits.

For trips with children, these two places offer different experiences: Klimatorium focuses on climate topics and interactive activities for children and adults. At the children’s exhibition “Lidenlund i børnehøjde” at Lemvig Museum, children can play, dress up and try out life as a resident of a small Danish town in the 1950s.
