A trip to Lukov near Zlín can be planned around two distinct themes: Hrad Lukov, with its historic sites, and nature, with its trails, rocks, forest and water. A look at the approximate trail lengths can help you distinguish a visit to the castle from longer walks and consider the different themes as separate parts of your excursion.

Hrad Lukov and Its Trails

The origins of Hrad Lukov date back to the first third of the 13th century. Gradual heritage restoration began in 1987; in 2016, the castle was named Czech Monument of the Year. Three nature trails have been set up for visitors on the grounds. There are also educational programs, particularly for children and young people. If you plan to take part in one, check in advance which program is available on your visit date.

The Naučná stezka “Hrad Lukov” runs through the upper part of the castle and explains its history and architectural development. It is about 500 meters long on average and takes approximately 60 minutes. The Naučná stezka Lukov is on a different scale: it has an 8-kilometer main loop and a 10.5-kilometer version with detours. Eight information panels along the route highlight numerous natural features. The green-marked trail passes through a rock crevice from the Brzová natural monument area to Hrad Lukov; Hájenka pod Růžovou is listed as the starting point for the Naučná stezka Lukov.

If you are interested in legends, you can include the “Z pověsti do pověsti” loop in your plans. It is about 3 kilometers long and leads to ten stops featuring selected legends from Lukov. The three options have different focuses: the castle’s development, nature, or traditional tales. The stated distances and approximate duration of the castle nature trail offer a more concrete comparison than a simple list of trail names.

Cultural Monuments and Historical Connections

Construction of Kostel sv. Josefa began in 1810. Its interior features simple Empire architecture, with individual elements inspired by the Baroque style in their ornamentation. The altarpiece depicts the death of Saint Joseph and is by the Viennese painter A. Schilling. The architecture and subject of the painting offer two different perspectives on the church: the style of its interior and the story behind its central altarpiece.

Boží muka is a Baroque wayside shrine at the crossroads toward Lešná and Fryšták. A sandstone statue of the Madonna stands atop a brick pillar. The shrine was commissioned in 1660 by Jan Fridrich Minkvic z Minkvicburku, an heir to Hrad Lukov. Stará Lesovna also has a historical connection to the region: in the late 19th century, it was the residence of the wife of composer Bedřich Smetana.

Natural Monuments, Rocks and Water

Bezedník is a natural monument and a stop on the trail through the Lukovský polesí forest. During the First Czechoslovak Republic, it was a forest bathing area with a buffet, seating and boats. Another natural attraction is Borovice u Bezedníku: the Scots pine is about 100 to 150 years old, more than 35 meters tall, and towers above the surrounding trees.

The Bělovodské rybníky ponds were restored in 1962 for recreation and fishing. The municipality particularly recommends the ponds to nature lovers for swimming and relaxation; check the swimming conditions on site. The Králky natural monument lies within the cadastral area of Lukov u Zlína, approximately one kilometer northeast of Lukov. It protects distinctive rock formations made of Magura Flysch rock. In the past, the rock formations also served as an outwork fortification for Hrad Lukov. Králky is a good starting point for hikes and exploring the surrounding area.

At Králky, there are seats carved into the rock and a stone table. According to tradition, they are connected with a meeting between young members of the Seilern noble family from Lukov-Lešná and the Magnis family from Strážnice at the beginning of the 19th century. Visitors can test their skills in adrenaline sports on the rocks below Hrad Lukov.

Other protected natural sites have a variety of features: Chladná dolina protects forest calcareous tufa springs and a species-rich beech forest; Vela preserves one of the last remnants of natural beech forests in the Hostýnské vrchy hills. The Vela area and its surroundings also contain important nesting and refuge areas for numerous bird species. Rock outcrops are visible at Králky. Studánka Rybárka, meanwhile, is a fissure spring that emerges from a sandstone massif and is one of the most abundant springs in the wider area. These natural destinations differ not only in their trails, but also in the habitats and geological features they protect.
