Vlachovice combines a specific theme to explore—the traditional fruit drying houses—with museums devoted to folk culture and cooperage. The educational trail starts and ends in the village and can be planned in full or as a shorter route. Two different cycling connections are also worth noting: the educational trail is suitable for cycling, and official cycle route 5058 also passes through Vlachovice.

Exploring the fruit drying houses

The educational trail to the fruit drying houses is 15 kilometres long. It connects eight traditional houses, four of which are still in operation, and also passes through scenic corners of the White Carpathians. If you do not want to plan for the full route, you can take a shorter version. The stated distance may vary slightly if the route is adjusted. You can follow the educational trail on foot or by bike and choose how to get around according to your plans.

As a separate point of reference, official cycle route 5058 runs from Slavičín via Vlachovice towards Vlachova Lhota. It should therefore be distinguished from the educational trail, whose special focus is the fruit drying houses. If you want to plan your cycling around a specific route, the route number and the places listed will help you identify its course.

Folk culture and cooperage

The Museum of Folk Culture and Traditions of the Vlachovsko Region is housed in an old farmhouse in Vlachovice. On display are unique ceramic vessels from the archaeological site of Ďulův kopec. The museum’s location and the vessels’ origins offer two distinct points of interest: the historic farmhouse as a setting and the ceramics as a specific exhibition theme.

The Bednářské Museum is devoted to traditional cooperage. The tools and products on display include barrels, tubs, vats and planters. By prior arrangement, the museum also offers a glimpse into the cooper’s workshop. If seeing the workshop is part of your plans, arrange your visit in advance. This distinguishes the craft museum from the folk culture exhibition: the focus here is on the objects and workshop of the cooper’s trade.

Production and an annual event

Sušírna sv. Františka operates year-round. Herbs and fruit are dried there, and Květomluva uses them to make teas, syrups and herbal bath blends. The production of these products is another tangible theme connected with drying herbs and fruit.

A recurring event is “Putování po vlachovských sušírnách”. It traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in September. If you want to combine your trip with the event, check the date for your intended travel year. Its regular traditional date helps you plan for this possible visit without tying other activities to a specific event day.

Landscape and leisure

Most of the cadastral area of Vlachovice lies in the northernmost part of the CHKO Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. Much of the land has long been used as natural pastures and meadows for sheep, cattle and horses. Both the protected-area setting and the use of the land are therefore among the described landscape features of the village area.

The remains of a water castle lie on the southern edge of Vlachovice. This is another historical point of interest, alongside the museums and craft traditions. For leisure in the village, the Vlachovice outdoor swimming pool has one large and one small pool. It also has a sand volleyball court. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your visit: the educational trail and its houses, museums with specific collections and craft themes, and the swimming pool with its two pools and volleyball court.
