Dešná brings together traces of rural architecture and archaeology with a wooded setting in the Přírodní park Vizovické vrchy Nature Park. The village can therefore be explored from several perspectives: through its landscape, its preserved wooden houses and sites bearing very different evidence of early settlement.
Landscape and Routes
Dešná lies in a wooded landscape within the Přírodní park Vizovické vrchy Nature Park. The village covers 216 hectares, about half of which is forested. Forest is therefore one of the defining features of the landscape around the village.
Route information also varies by type and course. Long-distance cycle route No. 46 runs north to south through the Dešná area. The Portášská educational hiking trail is 7 kilometres long and runs from Oškerovy paseky via Jasenná to Vartovna. It has six stops and three information points. This makes it possible to choose between a long-distance cycle route through Dešná and an educational hiking trail with a stated length and named stops.
Wooden Houses and Heritage Conservation
Several original wooden houses characteristic of the Valašsko region have been preserved in Dešná. One of these houses is listed as an immovable cultural monument in the state heritage register. The preserved buildings give the village a distinct architectural character, different from the archaeological traces in the surrounding area.
The rural dwelling No. 15 is also listed as an individual monument. Its hipped roof is covered with fish-scale tiles and has bevelled gable ends. The house illustrates a distinctive roof design with traditional tiling; the wooden houses as a whole also reflect the architectural style characteristic of Valašsko.
Hrádek and Zlatná: Traces of the Púchov Culture
The Hrádek archaeological site lies within the territory of Dešná. It is a fortified hilltop settlement of the Púchov culture from the Late La Tène period, dating to the end of the 1st century BC. Investigations in 1987 uncovered a stone axe, pottery and iron objects there. The most significant find was considered to be a forge shovel; deposits of iron objects were also discovered at Hrádek.
Archaeological investigations at Hrádek, in the area between Všemina and Dešná, also confirmed settlement by the Púchov culture. Traces of a timber palisade were found, apparently destroyed by fire. The hilltop settlement and the palisade traces thus provide two different indications of the site’s settlement history.
The Zlatná site, also known as Zlatnice, includes a settlement of the same culture. An estimated 12 to 20 Celtic gold coins were found there; only three of them can currently be identified. Hrádek is classified as a fortified hilltop settlement, while Zlatná is notable in particular for its settlement and coin finds. The two sites therefore offer different perspectives on the history of the same culture.
The Memorial Cross at Na kopci
A wooden memorial cross stands at Na kopci in Dešná. Its elevated location was deliberately chosen so that the cross could be seen from a distance. It once stood at a symbolic crossroads and marked the entrance to the Všemina area. This historical role sets the cross apart from the preserved houses and archaeological sites: the focus here is a memorial with a former significance for access to a neighbouring area.
