In Topolná’s village square stand two farmsteads that together make up the Muzeum v přírodě Topolná open-air museum. Listed as monuments of folk architecture, they illustrate the typical form of houses in the Pomoraví region, built from unfired bricks. Church art, a folklore festival and themed trails add to the village’s cultural appeal.

Farmsteads and Everyday Life at the Open-Air Museum

The two farmsteads are numbered 90 and 93. Building No. 93 is open to the public and can be visited by prior arrangement. Its exhibition presents the way of life and furnishings of a farmstead in the late 19th century. The upper chamber also houses exhibitions on washing and fishing. At No. 93, then, the traditional architectural style is complemented by a focus on life in a farmstead.

The Muzeum v přírodě Topolná can be visited from April to October, Monday to Sunday, by prior arrangement. Make arrangements in advance and check the visiting conditions before your trip. The courtyard of Building No. 90 serves a different cultural purpose: it is used by the Včelaran folklore ensemble as a rehearsal space and a venue for cultural programmes.

Church Art and Folklore

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary also features notable works of art: it houses a rare 18th-century statue of Saint Anne. Since 1999, the church has also had stained-glass windows based on a design by Jan Jemelka. The statue and the windows offer distinct points of interest: one is a depiction of a saint from the 18th century, while the other has been part of the church since 1999.

A special occasion for folklore is Slovácké hody s právem. The festival continues to be celebrated in Topolná on the last Saturday and Sunday in September. A procession of young people in traditional costumes, accompanied by a brass band, makes its way through the village. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact dates for the year in question.

Nature Trail and Cycling Route

The “PO TOPOLSKÝCH LÚKÁCH” nature trail is a circular route with hand-painted information boards and several shelters. Its focus is flooded meadows, considered a historical phenomenon in the area. The trail combines a circular route with a clearly defined theme, and the boards highlight what makes the meadows distinctive.

The area around Kněžpolský les is also botanically connected with Topolná: among other plants, the very rare floodplain violet violka vyvýšená grows there. It is found in only a few places in Moravia, including Topolná. This plant is a distinct natural attraction alongside the nature trail’s focus on flooded meadows.

For cyclists, a route runs from Podolí via Jarošov and Kněžpole to Topolná, continuing on to Březolupy. The section through Topolná is designated cycling route 5055. The nature trail and cycling route differ in both form and focus: the circular trail explores a particular meadow-related theme, while the cycling route connects Topolná with a series of named places. Check the signage and road conditions before setting off.

For planning purposes, the museum and the folklore festival follow different schedules: the museum operates from April to October and requires advance arrangements, while the festival takes place on a specific weekend in September. This can help you decide whether the farmsteads and their exhibitions, the festival dates, or the themes of meadows and cycling routes are the main focus of your stay.
