In Veletiny’s village square stands a life-size sandstone statue of Saint Anthony. It is a prominent religious landmark in the village centre. The area also features wine cellars, traditions observed on specific calendar dates, and routes with different focuses. Travellers looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Veletiny can choose between architectural history, village traditions, a wine trail and a cycle path.
Wine Cellars and Architectural History
In the Stará hora area, there are 16 wine cellars dating from the mid-19th century, protected as a monument to folk architecture. In 1995, the entire Búdy complex was declared a conservation area by the government of the Czech Republic. Veletiny has also preserved the oldest typological form of the Búdy. The cellars’ construction date and the designation as a conservation area mark two different historical moments: when the cellars were built and the later state protection of the complex.
The Tvrz Veletiny fortress is also part of the village’s history. It was built by Záviš, known as Veletka of Veletiny (1365–1406). Remains of the oval fortification have been discovered during archaeological investigations.
Religious Landmarks and Landscape
The wine-growing village of Veletiny extends along the foothills of the Hlucká pahorkatina hills. There are seven crosses in the cadastral area of Veletiny. The newest stands beside a field track that climbs between the fields to the ridge between Veletiny and the Kojatínek forest. When visibility is good, the cross beside the field track near Kojatínek offers panoramic views of Velký Lopeník, Velká Javořina, Buchlov and the hills above Provodov. The village square and the field track along the ridge thus provide two different points of reference for religious landmarks in Veletiny.
Traditions on Specific Calendar Dates
The Nošení Mařeny tradition is regularly observed in Veletiny on Smrtná neděle Sunday. Nové léto also takes place regularly on that Sunday. The procession of the královničky takes place in Veletiny on Pentecost Sunday. Nošení Mařeny and Nové léto therefore share a calendar date, while the procession of the královničky is associated with Pentecost Sunday. If you are travelling specifically to attend a tradition, check its event date in advance.
Routes and Refreshments
The Uherskohradišťská vinařská stezka wine trail passes through Veletiny. A marked cycle path towards Vlčnov runs alongside Veletiny’s protected folk architecture reserve. The two references have different focuses: the wine trail’s name itself indicates its connection to wine-growing, while the route towards Vlčnov is specifically identified as a cycle path and its direction is given. You can plan your choice accordingly: the wine trail or the marked cycle path by the reserve.
You can also stop for refreshments at a local inn. Along with architectural heritage, traditions and routes, a local place to eat is another practical point of reference for your stay.
