Hostětín brings together nature design, landscape art and regional production. When planning a stay, these themes can be considered separately: the nature garden focuses on biodiversity, educational trails offer different perspectives, and Centrum Veronica adds education and architecture to a visit to the village. The local cider press and an annual festival held in September also reveal other facets of the village.
Nature Garden and Learning
The nature garden at Centrum Veronica is open year-round and free to enter; admission is by voluntary donation. Check local information before your visit. Various features promote biodiversity, including shelters and nesting structures for reptiles, birds, bumblebees, hedgehogs, insects and bats. The garden is therefore designed with both landscaping and refuges and nesting opportunities for different groups of animals in mind.
A demonstration nature garden and orchard engages the public through an educational trail and playful activities. Its themes include nature-friendly gardening, preserving old fruit varieties and restoring extensive ecological orchards in the landscape. These topics give the garden a practical and landscape-related focus: they cover both caring for individual plants and the role of orchards in the surrounding area.
Wood Art and Trails through the Landscape
The “Sochy v krajině” project links 15 wooden sculptures along a trail; some installations are located in the cadastral area of Hostětín. The works stand at viewpoints, springs and places associated with local legends. The project thus draws on different features of the landscape and complements the mosaic typical of the White Carpathians, with its fields, gardens, orchards, meadows and predominantly deciduous forests.
The educational trails each have a different focus. “Po zelené Hostětínem” is about 1.5 km long and suitable for walkers and cyclists. Conditions and signage may change; check local information before setting out. The “Naokolo Hostětína” educational trail offers lovely views from the hills. In good visibility, the pilgrimage sites of Velehrad and Hostýn can be seen above Pitín. The first trail specifies its length and modes of travel, while the second focuses on the views.
Centrum Veronica and Regional Themes
Centrum Veronica was built in 2006 as the first public building in the Czech Republic to meet the passive-house standard. It also provides the public with educational and informational services on sustainable regional development and ways to put it into practice. The architecture and educational work offer two distinct points of interest: the building represents a notable chapter in architectural history, while the services provide an opportunity to explore the region’s development.
Local products include Hostětín organic apple juices and organic herbal syrups, made at the cider press since 2000. More than four fifths of production is certified as “BIO – Product of Organic Farming.” The apples are sourced primarily from organic farmers in the White Carpathians. Alongside nature and landscape, regional food production is therefore another part of the village’s character.
The Jablečná slavnost takes place every year in September in Hostětín, at the foot of the White Carpathians. The festival includes culture and environmental education; exact dates and programme details vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the latest date and programme in advance.
