Medlovice lies at the foot of the Chřiby Hills. Its character combines a distinctive geological exposure with traditional ceramics and local customs. Three topics are especially useful for finding your bearings: cycling routes in the area, Medlovický Quarry, and historical and contemporary cultural traditions in the village. The view thus ranges from porcelainites in various colours to a 19th-century chapel and Easter processions that are still maintained today.
Cycling routes and MedlovickĂ˝ Quarry
Cycling routes in the area include the Velkomoravská poutnà cesta of the Buchlov Microregion. The Slovácko cycling route “Přes rozhledny na Hradisko sv. Klimenta” runs through Polešovice, Vážany, Medlovice, Vřesovice and Osvětimany. Along this route, Medlovice lies between Vážany and Vřesovice.
The disused MedlovickĂ˝ Quarry offers a unique, complete profile exposure of porcelainites and is the only site of its kind in Moravia. There, the porcelainites are exposed in red, purple, blue-grey and brown over a thickness of five metres. This makes the quarry a specific destination for travellers interested in geology and rock colours. MedlovickĂ˝ Quarry is freely accessible; by car, you can get as far as 250 metres away. Check local conditions before setting off.
History and cultural connections
A chapel in Medlovice is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and dates from 1866. A monument to T. G. Masaryk was unveiled in 1930. After the war, a bust of T. G. Masaryk and a plaque commemorating those who fell in the Second World War were reinstalled. These three memorial sites represent different historical connections: a religious chapel, a Masaryk monument and a plaque commemorating the fallen.
The Slovácko dialect is spoken in Medlovice. In addition, older women still wear clothing featuring elements of the Podhorácko folk costume. The language and costume elements show two distinct facets of local culture; the description of the clothing specifically refers to older women.
Customs and ceramics
Local traditions include Easter processions with rattles, which are still maintained, and the Slovácké hody on 16 October, the feast day of Saint Gall. The form of the hodové právo preserves an element of tradition connected with the village’s former affiliation with the Buchlov estate. A costumed group took part in the Slovácké hody s právem 2025. If you want to plan your visit around a particular custom, check the dates in advance.
Medlovice has two pottery workshops practising traditional handcraft. The Náplavovi Pottery Workshop is considered worth a visit. There, traditional functional pottery is made entirely by hand on a potter’s wheel, including cups, bowls, teapots, canisters and jugs; the specific range may change. At the two workshops, you can choose ceramic products and may be able to make a cup or vase yourself. Check before visiting whether these options are currently available.
You can get to know Medlovice through a variety of interests: cycling routes, the distinctive rock exposure, local memorial sites or pottery. The customs add specific dates and a tradition that is still maintained today to these aspects of the village.
