Jankovice lies in the Chřiby Valley on both sides of the Jankovský potok and stretches from southeast to northwest. The local history can be read in two sacred buildings: the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Chapel of Saint Anthony. Hiking trails, a historic tower clock, and folklore offer other, clearly distinct points of interest.
Location, Trails, and Nature
Hiking trails pass through Jankovice from the direction of Kostelany, Salaš, and Halenkovice. At the U Králova stolu spring, access leads from a field track along a well-trodden path; the spring is accessible year-round. Check current conditions before your visit, as the path’s surface may change seasonally.
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built from 1839 to 1841 and consecrated on November 21, 1841, by Josef Berdhauer, Dean of Uherské Hradiště. It has been protected as a cultural monument since May 3, 1958; its register number is ÚSKP 27088/7-3338. It is also part of the European Site of Community Importance “CZ0723750 Jankovice – kostel.” The roof spaces are home to a regionally significant summer colony of greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis), while Nathusius’ pipistrelle bats (Eptesicus serotinus) occur in the tower.
The church first took part in the Otevřené brány program in 2025 and was open to visitors free of charge from May 1 to September 30; free guided tours and narrated visits were offered. The dates given are for 2025; check the current program dates for a later season. Independently of this, the historic Baroque tower clock can be viewed year-round by prior telephone arrangement.
Chapel and Folklore
The Chapel of Saint Anthony stands beyond the village, beside a road leading deeper into the Chřiby. There, the forest encloses the valley on both sides. It is the village’s second sacred building. A spring lies near the chapel; the year 1912 is carved into its stone vault. The two buildings offer different historical details: the church is notable for its construction and consecration, while the nearby spring points to the year 1912 in the case of the chapel. Josef Zgarbík, a resident of Jankovice, built the chapel in 1906—later than the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which was built from 1839 to 1841.
The traditional krojované Hody in Jankovice are part of the Hody season in August. You can check specific dates before your trip. The Folklorní festival Jankovice held its fourth edition and provided a stage for dance and singing ensembles from Slovácko and Slovakia. Check future festival dates separately if you would like to plan your visit around them.
