Tupesy combines a history of ceramics with a Neo-Romanesque chapel, a pilgrimage tradition and routes linking local culture with the landscape. Two different routes are worth considering when planning your trip: the 2 km-long Stezka keramiků and an 8 km-long cycling route from Staré Město via Velehrad. Spring wine tastings and an autumn folk festival also feature in the events calendar.
Ceramic history in the village
The Tupeské keramiky Museum is housed in Tupesy’s oldest building, constructed in 1832. The house is a listed monument of folk architecture and represents the home of a smallholder and potter. It is in the village centre and was formerly used for ceramic production. The museum brings together local and craft history.
Visitors can make their own plate in the ceramics workshop. If you would like to plan this activity, check in advance what options are currently available. An archaeological discovery also forms part of the village’s history: a Slavic sunken-floor house dating from the late 9th or early 10th century was discovered in the “Za Branou” area. The finds include numerous fragments of vessels of various shapes.
Chapel and pilgrimage tradition
The Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built from sandstone blocks; construction was completed in 1852. It is designed in the Neo-Romanesque style. The chapel is associated with the traditional Tupesy pilgrimage held around 31 May. After the last pilgrimage in 1967, the tradition was revived in 2014. The chapel and museum offer different ways to explore Tupesy’s architectural and cultural history.
Routes to ceramics and the landscape
The Velkomoravská poutní cesta 5150 runs from Staré Město railway station via Velehrad to Tupesy. The section to Tupesy is 8 km long and suitable for all cyclists. Check the current route signs before setting out. In Tupesy, the 2 km-long Stezka keramiků leads to places associated with the local ceramics tradition. It is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists.
The two routes have different focuses: the Stezka keramiků connects places associated with ceramics in Tupesy, while the longer cycling route links Staré Město, Velehrad and Tupesy. Original wood carvings add character to the local ceramics trail. Seating areas offer views of the Chřiby panorama.
Tupesy can be reached by public transport from Uherské Hradiště and from Staré Město railway station. Check current connections for your chosen travel date.
Landscape, wine and festivals
Tupesy lies in the fertile floodplain of the Zlechovský potok stream, which rises in the forests of the Chřiby. Winegrowing and winemaking also have a long tradition in the village. The Slovácko culture is still reflected in Fašanky: the carnival processions feature cimbalom music.
Wine tastings have been held in Tupesy at the beginning of April each year since 1990. The “Císařské hody” folk festival takes place on the third Sunday in October each year. You can plan your travel dates around one of these events without assuming that a fixed programme will be available for your entire stay.
