Hostějov combines a cultural and historical focus with the rolling landscape of the Kyjovská pahorkatina. The chapel, crosses and history of wine-growing reveal different facets of the village; a green-marked hiking trail runs through its cadastral area. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose to focus on architectural and local history, local traditions, or hiking in the surrounding area. The location also offers views over practically half of South Moravia.
Chapel and Crosses: History in the Village Landscape
Hostějov’s most significant monument is a four-sided stone chapel with a bell tower. It contains a small altar and an image of the Mother of God dating from 1866. The chapel was completely reconstructed in 2003 and designated a local monument. The dates refer to different aspects: 1866 is the date of the image, while 2003 marks the reconstruction of the building.
The solemn consecration of the chapel to Mary, Help of Christians, in May 2010 laid the foundation for annual May pilgrimages. The chapel is thus connected with its architectural history and religious tradition in different ways: the image and reconstruction provide specific historical reference points, while the consecration marked the beginning of the May pilgrimages.
The crosses can also be distinguished by their locations and dates. A stone cross dating from 1913 stands at the entrance to Hostějov. A second cross, from 1920, is located before the municipal boundary. A third stone cross stands at the edge of the village in the direction of Osvětimany and dates from 1927. Unlike the chapel, these landmarks are spread across several locations: the entrance, the area before the municipal boundary, and the edge of the village in a specified direction.
Rolling Hills and Hiking
Hostějov’s landscape is shaped by the rolling hills of the Kyjovská pahorkatina. It lies between the Chřiby mountain massif and the floodplain of the Morava River. The location offers views over practically half of South Moravia. The landscape connection thus extends from the nearby hills to a sweeping view across the region.
The area around Hostějov is suitable for hiking, and a green-marked hiking trail runs through its cadastral area. In addition to the individual cultural and historical sites, hiking is another option for your stay. The landscape and the trail offer different ways to find your bearings: the description of the rolling hills places the village in its surroundings, while the trail marking identifies a hiking route within the cadastral area.
Wine-Growing and Local Traditions
The history of wine-growing also adds to the picture of Hostějov. In the 18th century, wine-growing developed on the estate, and Hostějov had 15 měřic of vineyards. This figure provides a specific reference to the extent of wine-growing at the time and adds an economic dimension to the history of the monuments.
Local cultural traditions also include the Štěpánská zábava, which is traditionally held in Hostějov. Along with the annual May pilgrimages, it offers a way to experience the village through its customs, while the chapel and crosses make its architectural and local history visible.
