Polešovice lies at the transition between the Lower Morava Valley and the Chřiby Mountains. The Floriánka observation tower brings the landscape to life with its sweeping views; there is also a Baroque church, wine traditions and trails of very different lengths. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to your interests without trying to fit every attraction into a single itinerary.
Landscape, Views and Trails
Floriánka is 20.2 metres high. From the south side of the observation tower, the view extends across the entire White Carpathians and Hostýnské vrchy to the Pálava Hills. For a shorter walk, try the Stezka pod Floriánkou: it is just under two kilometres long and leads through the Skalka forest park in Polešovice. Along the way, there are ten fun activities; you can also try a wooden ball run beside the vineyards.
A significantly longer cycling option is the 42-kilometre Stezka Muškátu moravského. Its route passes through Uherské Hradiště, Kostelany nad Moravou, Nedakonice, Polešovice, Boršice, Buchlovice, Zlechov and Staré Město before returning to Uherské Hradiště. The Moravská vinná cycle route also runs through the cadastral area of Polešovice. This gives you a choice of a trail just under two kilometres long, a longer circular route with a specified distance, and another cycle route that passes through the municipality’s territory.
Church, History and Folk Costume
The first written mention of Polešovice dates back to 1220. At that time, the village belonged to the newly founded Cistercian monastery in Velehrad. The Church of St Peter and St Paul is the largest building on the monastery’s estates. Despite several renovations and restorations, it has retained its original Baroque design, both inside and out. History and architecture come together here in a tangible way.
The Polešovice folk costume also reflects the region’s culture: it belongs to the dolácké folk costumes of the Uherské Hradiště type, found in the Lower Morava region. At the Slovácké hody s právem, 150 to 200 participants in traditional costume take part; the event is held on the second Sunday in October. The programme for the relevant year is the best guide when planning your trip. Another historical detail can be found beside a field path: the stone reconciliation cross in Polešovice is about 1.5 metres high and probably dates from the 16th century.
Wine Tradition and Tastings
In Polešovice, wine is part of both the town’s history and the experiences visitors can enjoy. The oldest documented vineyard name is Mniška, recorded in 1454; it refers to a monastic vineyard. Floriánka, the name of the observation tower, comes from a white wine grape variety. It was bred at the local wine-breeding station and added to the State Variety Register in 2010.
The Šlechtitelská stanice vinařská has a wine information centre with a shop and the Golanské výšiny tasting room. An annual event held at Easter is the Košt vína, which brings together local and visiting winegrowers. Together with the autumn Slovácké hody s právem, this makes for a year-round calendar of different occasions to visit. Check the event programme for your travel dates.
