In Aussig (Ústí nad Labem), the landscape is shaped by the cones of long-extinct volcanoes. The restored ruins of Střekov Castle, the Větruše observation tower, the city’s buildings and the Elbe offer different ways to shape a stay. Decide whether you are mainly looking for views, architecture, a cycling route or a trip on the river.

Landscape and two different viewpoints

Střekov lies south of Aussig, above the Elbe’s right bank. The restored castle ruins stand on a 100-metre-high phonolite rock. From the castle terrace, you can look out over the city and the Elbe Valley. Here, the striking location above the river meets views of Aussig; the 100-metre height refers to the rock on which the castle stands.

Větruše offers a different perspective: its observation tower is 30 metres high and provides views of the Elbe Valley and Aussig. The tower is open year-round. Check its opening arrangements before your visit. This lets you distinguish between the two viewpoints by their character: Střekov combines the view with restored castle ruins, while Větruše features an observation tower.

Větruše: views, attractions and history

Větruše is a prominent landmark in Aussig. Its historical and social significance reflects the lifestyle at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The complex also includes a mirror maze, a natural maze, a children’s playground and sports facilities. Alongside the observation tower, it offers a range of other attractions. Individual facilities may have their own operating arrangements.

A 330-metre-long cable car runs between the Forum shopping centre and Větruše, offering views of the city and surrounding landscape. If you are planning a ride, check the latest operating information beforehand; operating details may change.

Buildings with different architectural styles

The architecture also provides its own landmarks. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Aussig is a neo-Gothic monument. The Mariánský Bridge was built in 1998. The specialist journal Structural Engineering International included it among the ten most beautiful structures worldwide from the 1990s. The church and bridge thus represent different architectural themes: a neo-Gothic church on the one hand, and a structure from the late 20th century on the other.

The Elbe, the cycle path and other destinations

For a cycling trip through the city, the Greenway Labe is a useful reference point. Also known as the Labská stezka, the cycle path runs along the Elbe’s right bank through Aussig and connects to the German Elbe Cycle Route. The two names therefore do not refer to separate local routes: Labská stezka is another name for the Greenway Labe, which connects to the Elbe Cycle Route.

The Dinosaur Nature Trail at the zoo offers something different. The trail features wooden and artificial models of prehistoric animals. If you are interested in these animals, the trail makes for a distinct excursion alongside the viewpoints, architecture and cycle path.

During the summer season, excursion boat line T91 connects Aussig with Litoměřice and Roudnice nad Labem; it may also run to Mělník. The boat then returns. As the service is seasonal and timetables may change, check the current timetable before including a boat trip in your plans.
