Přestanov is best explored through the sites commemorating the 1813 battle. Chapels, monuments and walking trails give a visit to the area a clear historical focus. Also of interest are the medieval and modern town centre and a cycling route. When planning your visit, you can explore the area from different perspectives: the history of the battle, the architecture of the chapels and the routes through the memorial sites.

Battle history and routes

A yellow-marked walking route starts in Přestanov and passes through the memorial sites of the 1813 battle. The route across the battlefields is just under 10 kilometres long. From the centre of Ústí nad Labem, you can reach the route by taking city bus 81 to Přestanov, where the sightseeing route begins. Check the timetable before your travel date so you can coordinate your journey with your planned visit. The route length and bus connection provide two practical points of reference for planning your visit.

Chapels with their own history

In the centre of Přestanov stands the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua. The rectangular building has a gabled roof and a semicircular apse beneath a conical roof. On the altar is a Baroque sandstone statue of Saint Anthony dating from 1726. The description thus combines a clearly identifiable architectural form with a dated work of art inside.

About 500 metres northwest of Přestanov, the Baroque Juchtová Chapel stands at a junction where the roads to Unčín and Stradov diverge. It lies on the axis of the main battle line, where Russian artillery and infantry guard units stopped the major French attack. The French Monument was erected next to the chapel in 1911. The location, construction date and battle history offer different points of reference for visiting the memorial sites.

Monuments and remembrance of 1813

The “Ruský pomník” monument in Přestanov commemorates the 1813 battle. It consists of a cast-iron pyramid topped by a figure of Nike, with lions at its base. Another memorial site is the mass grave in Přestanov. It contains the recovered remains of almost 10,000 of the more than 20,000 soldiers who fell in battle. The monuments offer different points of focus: one is distinguished by its form and figures, while the other preserves the mortal remains of the fallen.

Local history and other routes

Přestanov was founded as a village in the 12th century and first mentioned in writing in 1348. The two dates mark different milestones: the founding of the village and the first written mention of the place. The medieval and modern town centre is an archaeological area with confirmed archaeological finds or reasonable expectations of such finds. Přestanov is also part of the “Území bojiště u Přestanova, Chlumce a Varvažova” protected landscape and heritage zone.

Route 3009 is another point of reference for planning a cycling trip. It passes through Přestanov and runs from Adolfov via Unčín and Chlumec, then south to Radejčín. While the yellow-marked walking route passes through the memorial sites, Route 3009 can be followed by its sequence of place names. This gives you different ways to explore the area: the historical context of the battle, individual architectural and memorial sites, and the course of a longer cycling route.
