Chabařovice offers a focus on cultural history; Lake Milada adds scenic surroundings and opportunities for running, cycling and water sports today. When planning your trip, it is useful to distinguish between two options: are you mainly interested in architecture and local history, or would you prefer to focus on the lake and its activities?

Historic Buildings and Their Stories

The Stará radnice is an architecturally interesting building dating from 1609 that separates Chabařovice’s two squares. It was renovated in the mid-1990s, preserving its original tower clock and hand-wound mechanism. The building’s renovation and preserved clockwork offer two clearly distinguishable historical layers.

The Kostel narození Panny Marie church stands in the middle of Chabařovice’s square. Its history has two milestones: the first written record of its existence dates from 1352, while construction of the present-day church began from scratch in 1699. Thus, 1352 marks the written record, and 1699 the start of the present-day building.

The Kostelík sv. Jana Křtitele church was built in 1822 on the site of a demolished chapel. It includes a grotto that has survived to this day. From the church, there is a panoramic view of Chabařovice with the Ore Mountains in the background. Its construction history and the view offer a distinctive perspective on a visit to this church.

Museum, Remembrance and Events

The Muzeum města Chabařovice presents an exhibition on the history of Chabařovice from its beginnings to the Second World War. It also covers the history of settlements that had to make way for brown coal mining. The museum is currently open to the public by appointment.

The Památník bitvy na běhání memorial commemorates the battle of 1426, in which the Hussite army led by Prokop Holý fought against a numerically superior crusader army. The Chabařovická pouť adds a traditional event to these historical themes. It takes place regularly on the third weekend in May, providing a specific date to consider when planning your trip.

Lake Milada and Vyklická cesta

Lake Milada was created by flooding the open-cast mine’s remaining pit at Chabařovice–Milada. The former mine pit thus became a body of water. In 2015, the lake and its surroundings were opened to the public.

The Lake Milada area currently offers opportunities especially for running, cycling and water sports. Vyklická cesta connects Chabařovice with Lake Milada. The route offers a beautiful view of the lake and a sweeping panorama. It thus links the town with the lake and complements the activities there with scenic views.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can base your choice of Chabařovice on two interests: local history and architecture, or activities by the lake. This helps you decide first which theme you want to shape your stay.
