Baroque architecture and a meandering river offer different perspectives on culture and landscape in Kupařovice. The Krumlovsko Cycling Route also passes through the town. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider architectural history, cycling and nature as distinct areas of interest.

The Château and Chapel

The château stands on the eastern edge of Kupařovice and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It was built between 1739 and 1743 to a design by the architect František Antonín Grimm. The two-storey building has two wings and a rectangular floor plan; a passageway lies along the transverse axis. The floor plan describes the château’s overall form; the wings and passageway provide further details about the building’s layout.

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque circular rotunda. The chapel and a stone Baroque cross are protected as cultural monuments. Construction of the chapel began after 1718, and it was consecrated in 1722. Its circular form sets it apart from the rectangular château, which is divided into two wings. The 1722 consecration predates the château’s construction between 1739 and 1743, so the two Baroque buildings represent different construction periods.

As of 20 August 2026, the chapel was in a dilapidated state. As its condition may change, check before visiting.

An Older Connection: Horse Breeding

The Dietrichstein horse-breeding operation in Kupařovice began in 1666. Prince Ferdinand Joseph of Dietrichstein had horse stables built on a newly acquired estate as the basis for a future stud farm. This date is well before the chapel’s consecration and the château’s construction period. Alongside the Baroque construction periods, horse breeding therefore represents an older connection in the town’s history.

River Landscape and Cycling Route

Parts of Kupařovice’s cadastral area lie within the Niva Jihlavy Nature Park. A characteristic feature of the park is the Jihlava River’s naturally meandering course. The river is up to 20 metres wide and 2 metres deep there. A meandering river follows natural bends; here, this shape is one of the park’s characteristic features. These measurements give a concrete sense of the river’s size.

The nature park aims to protect the landscape character while also enabling sustainable tourism and recreation. The park thus describes a landscape area, while the château, chapel and cross are protected as cultural monuments. Protection and recreation are both part of the park’s concept; tourism is explicitly intended to be sustainable.

The Krumlovsko Cycling Route passes through Kupařovice. If cycling is one of your travel interests, you can consider the route as a separate planning point alongside architectural history and the nature park. It adds an active element to your choices, while the buildings and river landscape provide cultural and landscape-related themes.

The locations of these attractions also differ: the château stands on the eastern edge of Kupařovice, the cycling route passes through the town, and parts of the cadastral area lie within the nature park. For planning purposes, this means distinguishing between the location of a specific building, a route and a landscape area.
