In the Brno-Country District, different cultural and scenic highlights lend themselves to different travel plans: from monastery complexes and castles to museums, a nature park and a cycling route along the Svratka. This lets you tailor your search to the experiences you have planned, rather than assuming a fixed itinerary.

Monasteries, Architecture and Collections

Porta Coeli in Předklášteří is considered one of the Czech Republic’s most important architectural monuments. The monastery was founded in the 13th century as a Cistercian convent. Its notable features include the richly decorated Gothic portal and the chapter house with its stone reading lectern. The Podhorácké Museum is housed in the former provost’s residence. It has four permanent exhibitions and seasonal exhibitions; the exhibition programme may change. So check what is currently on display before your visit. The complex also includes a monastery brewery with a beer-tasting menu. Check current operating arrangements before your trip.

Another highlight awaits at Rajhrad Monastery, which houses the Moravian Museum of Literature. The historic Benedictine library contains 65,000 volumes. The monastery can be reached by train from Brno; check the timetables before your trip. In Ivančice, Rosa Coeli offers another way to explore the history of monasteries: the complex was founded in 1181 for Premonstratensian nuns. You can explore it from the main nave to the surviving staircase; a historical guided tour is also available. Check the current tour arrangements in advance.

The three monastic sites each have a different focus: Porta Coeli combines architectural details with a museum and brewery, Rajhrad with literature and a library, and Rosa Coeli with ruins and a historical guided tour. This comparison can help you choose the cultural focus of your trip.

Castles, Architectural History and Museums

Veveří developed over nearly eight centuries and was substantially expanded under Margrave John Henry. Dolní Kounice Castle also preserves traces of different building periods: its surviving architectural features range from Gothic to Renaissance. At Pernštejn, visitors can walk through the chambers and climb the tower. What is open to visitors may vary by season, so check current access arrangements in advance. Pernštejn has also been used as a filming location by film crews from around the world.

Only small remnants of a medieval fortress, first mentioned in 1349, survive on Bučín Hill. The mining museum in Oslavany offers a different perspective on history. It covers geology, minerals, mining methods and the lives of miners. Exhibits include a full-size model of an underground mine tunnel with a mining locomotive. The museum visit thus focuses on the technical and human aspects of mining, not just the equipment on display.

Nature, Riverbanks and Regional Specialties

Bobrava Nature Park is a generally protected area covering 30.90 km² and was designated in 1982. It lies in wooded terrain along the middle course of the Bobrava stream, in the central part of the Bobrava Highlands. As a separate scenic highlight, the Tišnovsko cycling route follows nature along the banks of the Svratka.

For more views, an acacia-wood observation tower stands on Výhon Hill above Židlochovice. Židlochovice is known as an apricot-growing area; the fruit comes from Výhon. The area therefore brings together two different themes: the hilltop viewpoint and the region’s connection to apricot growing.

Planning Your Journey and Accommodation

Specific train connections are useful to consider when planning your journey: Rajhrad Monastery can be reached by train from Brno. There are also railway stations in the municipalities of Střelice, Omice, Tetčice, Silůvky and Radostice. Check train services before your trip.

Check seasonal visitor offerings, guided tours and timetables to suit your plans. This helps you choose accommodation for the focus of your trip that matters most to you, while keeping the different places and their respective visitor arrangements in mind.
